  • Preparation of vulcanizable compositions by extruder mixing

    Abstract: Cross-linkable polymers are prepared by the introduction of the cross-linking agent to the main body of the polymer to be cross-linked in an extruder. This method reduces the "heat history" of the cross-linkable polymer and allows greater pre-extruder processing flexibility. Thus, mixing times can be reduced and the shelf life of the pre-extruded polymeric composition can be extended. After extrusion, the product may be cross-linked by heating.

  • Processible and vulcanizable polar polymers

    Abstract: A method of promoting peroxide initiated crosslinking of polar polymers whereby the solubility of peroxide vulcanizing agents in these materials is increased. Increased peroxide solubility and/or processibility is accomplished by blending certain ethylene copolymers with these highly polar polymers. The blending of ethylene copolymers with the polar polymers substantially reduces the viscosity of the latter polymers thereby enhancing their processibility.

    Abstract: A method of producing electrical conductor cable having a polyethylene-based coating, wherein additive material such as a filler is first mixed with a vehicle including an ethylene propylene rubber to provide a homogeneous concentrate, and the concentrate is then blended with polyethylene to constitute a coating composition for application to a cable as by extrusion. The concentrate-polyethylene blending step may be performed by the pumping screw of a cable-coating extruder.

    Abstract: In combination in an electric cable, at least one conductor, an essentially smokeless insulating jacket enclosing said conductor, the jacket consisting essentially of a chlorosulfonated polyethylene having uniformly dispersed therethrough an amount of magnesium oxide at least sufficient to suppress substantial cable jacket smoking when the cable is subjected to pyrolysis.
