  • Patent number: 5511563
Abstract: An apparatus and method for irradiating an inflamed joint of a patient having rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis are presented. A noncoherent source of radiation having a predetermined wavelength range is utilized to transilluminate affected tissues of the subject for a predetermined duration. The radiation source has sufficient intensity and is applied for sufficient duration to reducing inflammation and substantially halt disease progression.

  • Patent number: 5337741
Abstract: An apparatus for radiating high intensity energy at a subject for treating diseases such as rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis and a method for using the same. A radiation source generating radiation at a predetermined output wavelength transilluminates affected tissues of the subject for a predetermined duration. The radiation source has sufficient intensity and is applied for sufficient duration to photolyze disease-specific antigens within the transilluminated tissues responsible for evoking complex immune response, thus reducing inflammation and disease progression.

  • Patent number: 4757825
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an indication of a cardiopulmonary activity of a person using noninvasive monitoring means and for detecting motion in the area of the apparatus includes an electrostatic charge detector for providing an output signal including signals indicative of motion and cardiopulmonary activity of the person. A detection apparatus is connected to receive the signals and to filter the extraneous noise signals from the signals of interest to provide output signals indicative only of the motion of interest or cardiopulmonary activity of the person. Breathing signals are applied to a comparator which is tripped if breathing occurs at a rate below a predetermined value. Cardiac signals are applied to a circuit which adjusts the trip level for the breathing rate if the cardiac rate declines to a level suggestive of bradycardia without breathing rate increases.

  • Patent number: 4474185
Abstract: A capacitance type motion detector adapted to monitor an infant or a person in bed to provide an alarm for apnea episodes. A conductive grid array is provided on a plastic film or the like and disposed adjacent the person to be monitored. A 50 kHz oscillator having a floating circuit ground and an output connected to an earth ground pumps the earth ground. A voltage follower preamplifier having a common circuit ground with the oscillator is connected to the grid array which picks up the 50 kHz signal. Motion, such as breathing, of the person being monitored varies the capacitance to earth ground of the grid array thereby modulating the 50 kHz signal. The modulation envelope is detected, amplified and applied to a comparator. An alarm circuit produces a first output indication for each detected motion and a second output for absence of motion for a selectable time period. The second output in an apnea monitor may produce an alarm to permit immediate attention to the person.

  • Patent number: 3973208
Abstract: A capacitor detector device for detecting a change of capacitance in a protected zone, which device comprises an antenna element adapted to be mounted in spaced relationship with a grounded element to define the protected zone between the elements and having a nominal capacitance therebetween, which capacitance is changed upon intrusion of an object to be detected. The device includes an oscillator means for pumping, at a preselected frequency, the grounded element with respect to an internal floating ground of the device, means for connecting the antenna to the floating ground of the device whereby the antenna is capacitively coupled to the pumped ground element and means for detecting changes in the capacitive coupling of selected amounts between the antenna element and the pumped grounded element.
