Patent number: 5988833Abstract: A floodlight has a housing and a housing support coupled to the housing. In the improvement, the support includes a strut extending along a strut axis and having a distal end and a pivot member at a proximal end. The pivot member is mounted for movement about an axis of rotation and has a boundary spaced from the axis of rotation by a first dimension. The housing includes a housing surface proximate the axis of rotation and spaced therefrom by a second dimension less than the first dimension. The housing includes a recess therealong and when the strut is folded against the housing, the strut is received in the recess. A group of floodlight components comprises a main housing and two or more differently-shaped center housings. The attachment portions of the center housings are sized and configured to be interchangeably received at the main housing forward opening. The group thereby accommodates any one of several different lamps, e.g., PAR 20, PAR 30 and/or PAR 38.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1997Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Ruud Lighting, Inc.Inventors: Robert D. Giese, Eric J. Haugaard, Donald Wandler

Patent number: 5820255Abstract: A lighting-fixture support pole includes an interior cavity and a hand-hole opening having a length and a width. The improvement comprises a mounting plate having an interior surface and a sealing member compressed between such surface and the pole. The sealing member has an aperture therethrough with dimensions about equal to the length and width, respectively, of the hand-hole opening. A termination box extends from the mounting plate into the cavity and a receptacle is on the exterior surface of the mounting plate. The improved support pole permits a customer to opt for a blank plate or for a plate-mounted receptacle to close the opening. No opening other than the hand-hole opening need be provided in the pole.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1997Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: Ruud Lighting, Inc.Inventors: James S. Carrington, Donald Wandler

Patent number: 5566047Abstract: Disclosed is an AC electrical apparatus including a vibrating device and a mounting structure supporting the device. In the improvement, a resilient insulator is interposed between the device and the mounting structure so that vibrations are isolated from the mounting structure. In a highly preferred embodiment, the insulator has a disc-like component between a standoff spacer and the mounting structure. Another such component is between the mounting structure and the head of the bolt which attaching the device to the structure. And a tube-like component of the insulator is between the bolt and such structure.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: October 15, 1996Assignee: Ruud Lighting, Inc.Inventors: Michael J. Kahn, Donald Wandler

Patent number: 4164783Abstract: A weather-proof light fixture includes a quick connect modular ballast assembly which is separably connected to a light reflector member mounted on a support surface. A housing containing the ballast assembly has a lamp receptacle extending from a sidewall thereof. The light reflector member includes a neck portion the end of which is butted against the housing, receiving the lamp receptable therein. Outwardly projecting fastener arms extending from the neck portion each having a hollow cavity therein are rotated over posts protruding from the ballast housing sidewall, and located adjacent the lamp receptacle. Slots contained within the fastener arms receive screw fasteners extending from the posts to secure the lamp ballast housing and reflector member in a joined condition. A gasket disposed between the end of the neck portion and housing side wall, renders the light fixture waterproof.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1978Date of Patent: August 14, 1979Assignee: McGraw-Edison CompanyInventor: Donald Wandler

Patent number: 4156902Abstract: A latch assembly for removably securing an elongated electrical component tray in the housing of a light fixture comprises a bracket member having spaced side walls from which support members extend, respectively, in opposing relation toward the housing interior. A first one of the support members includes a plurality of alternately offset fingers between which a first end of the tray is received. A flat spring member mounted on the opposite bracket wall, transverse the second support member, defines a slotted aperture through which the second one of the mounting members extends. The spring member includes a cam surface for engagement by the second end of the tray to urge the spring away, permitting the tray end to be moved past the cam surface and be received in the slotted aperture for retaining the second end of the tray on the second support member. Release of the tray requires manual movement of the spring member for removal of the second end of the tray from within the slotted aperture.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1977Date of Patent: May 29, 1979Assignee: McGraw-Edison CompanyInventor: Donald Wandler

Patent number: 4156272Abstract: A mounting bracket formed integrally with a light fixture housing, mounts the fixture on either a flat surface, such as, a wall or a curved surface, such as, a post. The bracket includes a base portion having a front wall and opposed parallel side walls and opposed parallel upper and lower end walls joined to the rear surface of the front wall to define a cavity. The free ends of the upper and lower end walls are arcuate, curving inwardly from the opposite side walls toward the front wall for accommodating a cylindrical post or the like support member. A hollow support arm extends from the front surface of the front wall of the base portion to the housing and carries electrical wiring between the housing and the base portion of the mounting bracket. A pair of apertures for receiving mounting screws are defined in the front wall, one at each upper and lower end of the base portion.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1977Date of Patent: May 22, 1979Assignee: McGraw-Edison CompanyInventor: Donald Wandler

Patent number: 4155111Abstract: A latch and hinge assembly for releasably securing the refractor panel of a luminaire on the luminaire housing at the open end thereof includes first and second pairs of spring loaded plunger rods mounted at non-intersecting ends of the frame of the refractor panel, each such pair of rods extending along a common axis parallel to the edge of the corresponding end of the frame. The rod ends which normally extend outwardly from the frame at opposite ends thereof are received in aligned apertures in corresponding walls of the luminaire housing to attach the refractor panel thereto. Manually operated tabs for retracting the plunger rods of the first rod pair extend from a first surface of the panel facing the interior of the housing while the tabs for retracting the plunger rods of the second rod pair extend from the opposite surface of the panel facing the exterior of the housing. The location of the manually operated retracting tabs prevents the release of two rods not of the same pair.Type: GrantFiled: August 31, 1977Date of Patent: May 15, 1979Assignee: McGraw-Edison CompanyInventors: James P. Kelly, Donald Wandler

Patent number: 4019044Abstract: A lighting fixture for a luminaire, such as that for an outdoor floodlight, has all of the electrical components for the luminaire, including the lamp socket, mounted on a tray that is removable from the fixture. The lamp socket is affixed to the tray at a location such that it properly positions a lamp inserted therein with respect to an optical system. By using standardized trays with various different ballasts and other electrical component variations, the same floodlight housing may be utilized for a variety of lamp types and power ratings.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1975Date of Patent: April 19, 1977Assignee: McGraw-Edison CompanyInventors: James P. Kelly, Donald Wandler

Patent number: 3997778Abstract: An optical system for a luminaire, such as an outdoor floodlight, is provided by an assembly of reflectors. The main reflector assembly has a simply curved preformed back component and a pair of side components that are formed in the desired shape by forcing them into place between appropriate holding members in the luminaire housing. Top and bottom reflector components may be added to provide improved optical efficiency, improved appearance and separation thermally, mechanically and electrically between the optical chamber and other portions of the luminaire. All reflector components may be made of thin gauge prefinished reflector stock.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1975Date of Patent: December 14, 1976Assignee: McGraw-Edison CompanyInventors: Donald Fieldstad, Jr., Donald Wandler
