  • Patent number: 6826524
Abstract: A technique to encode a group of vectors by quantizing the group with each of a number of different codes (44) and selecting the quantization results which are most favorable. This technique may include providing several vectors to an encoder (40) of a communication system (20) and quantizing each of the vectors with a number of different codebooks (44) to generate a corresponding number of codeword sets with the encoder (40). The codeword sets are each representative of the vectors. Each of the codeword sets is evaluated by determining a corresponding distortion value. The codeword set with the lowest distortion is selected to encode the vectors based on this evaluation. The codebook (44) or sequence of codebooks (44) used to generate the selected codeword set may differ from one vector sample to the next to provide a sample adaptive coding scheme. Transmission of the encoded data to a decoder (50) of communication system (20) may also be performed where the original vectors are reconstructed.

  • Publication number: 20040076092
Abstract: A method and device are provided for adjusting a focus bias of an objective lens of an optical pickup for an optical disc using a level of a tracking error signal. The level of the tracking error signal outputted when the optical disc is rotated and driven is detected for a predetermined period of time. An operation of adjusting the focus bias of the objective lens is carried out on the basis of the detected level of the tracking error signal. A focus bias adjustment value is set as an optimum focus bias value at a time when the detected level of the tracking error signal is maximized. In accordance with the method, a period of time for adjusting the focus bias is very short, on the order of “0” to several hundred milliseconds, in comparison with periods of time for adjusting the focus bias in conventional methods, such that the focus bias can be quickly adjusted.

  • Publication number: 20030174617
Abstract: A method and device for determining the presence or absence of a disk and/or a disk size without using FG signals, are provided. The method includes placing a pickup at a first zone on the optical recording medium, the first zone located between an outer radius of a first recording medium type and an outer radius of a second recording medium type, where the outer radius of the second recording medium type is larger than the outer radius of the first recording medium type; detecting a reflected signal based on a returned beam from the first zone of the optical recording medium; and determining at least one of a size and an absence of the optical recording medium based on the detected reflected signal. Therefore, an FG sensor that is provided in a general disk device can be eliminated, thereby reducing the size and cost of a disk device.

  • Patent number: 6603721
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for controlling the rotation of a turntable, in order to move a disk mounting portion selected among a plurality of disk mounting portions installed on the turntable to a pickup side by a key input signal of a user which includes rotating the turntable by supplying a driving voltage to a turntable driving motor, sensing a rotational velocity of the turntable and the extract output delay time Td of the driving voltage of the motor for stopping the pertinent disk mounting portion at a reproducing position on the basis of the sensed rotation velocity, and cutting off the driving voltage output of the turntable driving motor after confirming the approach of the pertinent disk mounting portion to a reproducing position and confirming the output delay time.

  • Publication number: 20030103430
Abstract: A method and device for stopping a rotating optical recording medium without the use of an FG sensor, are provided. The method includes determining position information on a current position of a pickup on a rotating optical recording medium when a recording medium rotation stop request is received; determining a break voltage applying time based on the determined position information; and applying a break voltage to a motor for a duration of the determined break voltage applying time to stop the rotating recording medium. Therefore, an FG sensor that is provided in general disk devices can be eliminated to reduce the size and cost of a disk device.

  • Patent number: 6498047
Abstract: A wafer clamping tension measuring apparatus includes a base plate having a guide groove formed in an upper surface and a moving plate having a guide rail protruding from a lower surface and reciprocating with the guide groove. A tension gauge is fixed to an upper surface of the moving plate for measuring the tension of a wafer clamping elastic member confronting the tension gauge. A displacement restricting block is attached at one end of the base plate nearest to the wafer clamping elastic member to restrict the movement of the moving plate relative to the base plate when the moving plate is displaced towards the displacement restricting block.
