  • Patent number: 11708869
Abstract: Presented are clutch-type engine disconnect devices, methods for making/using such disconnect devices, and motor vehicles equipped with such disconnect devices. An engine disconnect device includes a notch plate, which has multiple notches and attaches to a torque converter, and a pocket plate, which has multiple pockets and attaches to an engine's crankshaft. A pawl is movably mounted within each notch; these pawls selectively engage the notches with the pockets. A notch plate insert is nested within each notch, supporting thereon one of the pawls. A selector plate interposed between the pocket and notch plates moves from a first position, to shift the pawls out of engagement with the pockets, and a second position, to move the notch plate inserts within the notches and allow the pawls to engage the notches with the pockets to thereby lock the notch plate to the pocket plate to rotate in unison with each other.

  • Publication number: 20230166710
Abstract: A method for controlling an electric drive unit (EDU) having a motor-driven torque converter includes receiving a request signal indicative of a requested output torque of the EDU, and operating the motor at a target motor speed using the requested output torque. The target motor speed minimizes system losses while achieving the requested output torque. When the requested output torque remains below a calibrated threshold and a turbine speed is less than a corner speed of the motor, a torque converter clutch (TCC) transitions to or remains in a locked state. The controller commands the TCC to transition to an unlocked state to reach the target motor speed, thereby selectively enabling torque multiplication. A powertrain system includes a driven load and the EDU. A computer readable storage medium may include executable instructions for performing the method.

  • Patent number: 11662005
Abstract: A drive system includes an electric machine that generates a torque. An output shaft rotates bi-directionally and receives the torque. A coupling is disposed between the electric machine and the output shaft. The coupling includes a torque converter that multiplies the torque. One clutch transfers the torque from the electric machine to the torque converter, when the electric machine operates in a first rotational direction. Another clutch transfers the torque from the electric machine to the torque converter, when the electric machine operates in a second rotational direction that is opposite to the first rotational direction. A gearset includes a number of meshing gears and is disposed between the electric machine and the output shaft to transfer the torque to the output shaft.

  • Publication number: 20230130402
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for designing a magnetic shielding apparatus and a magnetic shielding apparatus. The method includes: determining a region of interest inside the magnetic shielding apparatus, the region of interest being a region where a magnetic shielding effect is expected to be achieved, and the magnetic shielding apparatus including N layers of shields disposed in a nested manner; determining a complete parameter set; and obtaining, based on the complete parameter set, a set of result parameters for describing the geometric structure, the set of result parameters that enables magnetic flux density in the region of interest to meet a preset threshold. This method not only greatly improves optimized magnetic shielding performance compared with an equal-spacing solution, but also resolves a problem that an analytical method cannot be used to optimize a magnetic shielding apparatus with a non-concentric structure.

  • Patent number: 11391331
Abstract: A controller executes a method to manage an engine connect/disconnect decision in a powertrain having an engine, transmission, electric machine, and a battery pack and power inverter module (“TPIM”). In response to vehicle ground speed being less than a calibrated maximum electric vehicle accelerator pedal signal (“EVAPS”) level, the controller calculates a delta APS (“?APS”) value by subtracting a scaled APS value from the actual APS level. The scaled APS value is a scaled variant of a maximum EVAPS value selected from a maximum EVSAPS table, the latter populated based on inverter temperature, state of charge of the battery pack, and ground speed. When the ?APS value exceeds a threshold, the controller connects the engine to the transmission via an engine disconnect clutch. The engine is disconnected based on acceleration of the vehicle and the above-noted factors.
