  • Patent number: 4784518
Abstract: The invention here disclosed comprises a method and apparatus for rejuvenating an asphalt roadway surface resulting in up to approximately three inches of new repaved roadway surface produced at speeds of up to approximately twenty-two feet per minute. The method includes the steps of heating a top layer of roadway, scarifying that heated layer, adding a recycling agent and thoroughly mixing and screeding the road surface to form a recycled material, adding new asphalt mix to the recycled material and milling the combination to form a mixed material and leaving a sub-layer plane in the roadbed. The mixed material is next conveyed away to a paving station located at the end of the process. During this conveying, the sub-layer left by the milling cut is heated, scarified, treated and worked in a manner similar to the treatment performed on the top layer of road surface.

  • Patent number: 4534674
Abstract: A road resurfacing or repaving machine is disclosed. The machine is self-propelled, and has a chassis. A preliminary heater depends from the machine chassis to provide preliminary heat to the underlying road. A preliminary scarifier breaks up the top of the heated road surface. A main heater behind the preliminary scarifier provides a second heating action, and a main scarifier behind the main heater further scarifies the hot road material and the road surface. Spray means sprays liquid asphalt cutback over the hot, scarified material. A first macadam dispensing device behind the spray means dispenses new hot mix material to the hot, sprayed material and road surface to make up solid material lost through pot hole formation or other road deterioration. A first mixer commingles the newly added hot mix with the old, sprayed, scarified material on the road surface. A first screed levels and at least partly compacts this material to form a first lift.

  • Patent number: 4124325
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for recycling asphalt concrete roadways. The apparatus includes means for heating the roadway and applying emulsified asphalt thereto prior to scarifying the heated surface. The surface is then scarified so as to loosen the heated asphalt. The scarified material is then treated with asphalt and, if desired, a rejuvenating agent. They are mixed thoroughly to form a hot mix of asphalt concrete from the old road material. New material is added, and mixed with the old material by a pug mill rotor. The combined rejuvenated hot mix is further mixed and leveled by means of screws and then compacted substantially by a vibrating screed. The screed has a continuous bottom plate and a plurality of relatively movable upper sections which are connected by turnbuckles adapted to be adjusted for bending the bottom plate of the screed to conform to the contour of the road crown. Final compaction of the road surface is obtained by rollers.

  • Patent number: 4103973
Abstract: An asphalt pavement milling machine is disclosed which includes mechanism for precisely controlling the depth of cut made by a rotating milling head carried on a machine frame. The depth-of-cut control apparatus includes a shoe adapted to slide over the pavement, and fluid power cylinder means which urge the shoe toward and away from the head-carrying frame through a rocker arm and a vertical slide. A similar device can be mounted upon an opposite side of the machine frame. A fluid power system interconnects the operating cylinders to level the frame and provide smooth, stress-free operation.

  • Patent number: 4011023
Abstract: A machine for recycling macadam highway pavement is disclosed. A pickup device removes crumbled pavement material from a roadbed site, and heaters heat the material as it passes through the machine. An applicator applies liquid asphalt to the material to form a rejuvenated mix. Simultaneously, roadbed heaters heat the roadbed site, and an applicator applies liquid asphalt. A spreader spreads the mix on the roadbed site, and adjustable screeds preliminarily form the spread mix for final working into a finished road.

  • Patent number: 4008975
Abstract: Disclosed is apparatus for conveying asphalt concrete materials from a loading station to a dispensing section of a road resurfacing machine. The conveying apparatus is provided with a loading area for receiving asphalt concrete mixtures and conveying the mixtures first in one direction for a short distance over a fixed platform from which it falls to a trough where the mixtures ae moved in the opposite direction along the bottom of the trough by a lower conveyor flight comprising a plurality of spaced apart bar elements associated with the conveyor.
