    Abstract: Disclosed is a novel melt blown spinnerette and process for making bicomponent fine fibers whereby a spinning nozzle fed by one type of polymer from one chamber is located inside another larger spinning nozzle fed by a second chamber, said nozzle pairs being arranged in multiple rows of spinning orifices, and directing high speed streams of gas to each row of spinning orifices. The design of having a nozzle inside a nozzle does not require laminar flow of layered molten masses of different polymers. The fibers made hereby have a broad fiber size distribution.

    Abstract: Fibrous webs of bi-component fibers are made by extruding a polymer through one set of nozzles arranged in multiple rows, and another polymer through a second set of nozzles each of which surround a nozzle of the first set. In the design of having a nozzle inside a nozzle, contact between polymer pairs can be avoided inside a spinnerette, and bic-omponent fibers of unique properties can be produced. Polymer pairs can be grouped together which could not be co-extruded in traditional designs where laminar flow of layered molten masses of different polymers is rerquired.

    Abstract: An apparatus and process for extruding fiberforming thermoplastic polymers through spinning nozzles arranged in multiple rows are forming a non-woven web of high strength fibers. The molten fibers are accelerated by expanding hot gas flowing parallel to the extrusion nozzles and the fibers to a first velocity and cooled below their melting point, and subsequently accelerated to a higher velocity by an air jet fed with compressed cold air. The resulting fibers have a high degree of molecular orientation and tenacity and are collected on a moving collecting surface as a non-woven web.

The air orifices are formed by a family of plates which effect the perfect centering of each nozzle in each of the circular air orifices.

    Abstract: There is described a process for producing a novel porous fabric having at least 100,000 surface perforations per square inch by the biaxial stretching at ambient temperatures of a sheet of a composite fiber-film substrate formed by hot calendaring, inter alia, a laminate of a woven or non-woven web of fibers having a residual elongation of at least 40% and a synthetic polymeric film material constituting at least 20% by volume of the composite fiber-film substrate. Stretching of the composite fiber-film substrate is effected by passage through interdigitating grooved rollers having grooves spaced at a distance of less than one millimeter times the web basis weight in grams per square meter with concomitant control of the velocity of introduction of the composite fiber-film substrate into the nip of the grooved rollers to substantially the identical surface velocity of the grooved rollers.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a novel apparatus and process for melt-blowing from fiberforming thermoplastic molten polymers to form fine fibers by extruding through orifices in nozzles the molten polymer at low melt viscosity at high temperatures where the molten fibers are accelerated to near sonic velocity by gas being blown in parallel flow through small orifices surrounding each nozzle. The extruded molten polymer is passed to the nozzles through a first heating zone at low incremental increases in temperature and thence rapidly through said nozzles at high incremental increases in temperature to reach the low melt viscosity necessary for high fiber acceleration at short residence time to minimize or prevent excessive polymer degradation.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a novel groove roller and roller assembly comprised of two of such grooved rollers wherein the grooved roller is comprised of a plurality of discs having varying diameters and positioned on a shaft thereby forming a grooved roller of self-centering groove components. In a preferred embodiment, discs of one diameter and discs of another diameter are alternately mounted on the shaft. Also disclosed is a roller assembly formed of two of such grooved rollers in interdigitating or intermeshing relationship for laterally stretching incremental portions of an orientable thermoplastic substrate by introducing such substrate into a nip formed by such interdigitating grooved rollers whereby the velocity of introduction thereof is controlled to substantially the rotational velocity of such grooved rollers.

    Abstract: Normally hydrophilic inorganic fillers for polymeric resins are modified to enhance their dispersibility in such resins by admixing filler particles with a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide under shear and at an elevated temperature so as to coat the filler particles with a portion of the block copolymer.
