  • Patent number: 6294584
Abstract: The present invention provides for methods for fumigating soil containing deleterious organisms such as nematodes. The methods utilize an effective amount of acrolein over sole demand for acrolein which when added to the soil will control the organisms but will not exhibit phytotoxicity towards the existing or future plant life.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 29, 1999
Date of Patent: September 25, 2001
    Assignee: Betzdearborn Inc.
Inventors: Edmund J. Bockowski, Dwight P. Davis
  • Patent number: 5866614
Abstract: The present invention provides for methods for fumigating soil containing deleterious organisms such as nematodes. The methods utilize an effective amount of acrolein which when added to the soil will control the organisms but will not exhibit phytotoxicity towards the existing or future plant life and an effective amount of a detoxification compound such as for example: sulfites, bisulfites, ammonia or ammonium compounds.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 6, 1997
Date of Patent: February 2, 1999
    Assignee: BetzDearborn Inc.
Inventors: Edmund J. Bockowski, Dwight P. Davis
  • Patent number: 5531937
Abstract: Compositions and a method of using the compositions to inhibit corrosion. The compositions are water soluble n-alkyl morpholine, saturated dicarboxylic acid, optionally alkanol amine and optionally surfactant compositions which inhibit ferrous metal corrosion when added to aqueous oxygen-free solutions.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: July 2, 1996
    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: Ljiljana V. Minevski, Edmund J. Bockowski
  • Patent number: 5500220
Abstract: A foam carrier for a dust control agent and a biological control agent is provided to control fugitive dust dissemination and biological activity in bulk/granular solids.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 17, 1995
Date of Patent: March 19, 1996
    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.

  • Patent number: 5401323
Abstract: Methods and compositions for removing deposits from surfaces in contact with the water of a cooling water system are disclosed. A lignosulfonate compound, alone or in combination with other materials, is effective in removing such deposits.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 8, 1993
Date of Patent: March 28, 1995
    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: Donald T. Freese, Raymond M. Post, Edmund J. Bockowski
  • Patent number: 5342548
Abstract: Methods are provided for inhibiting the corrosion of iron and iron-containing methods in contact with aqueous systems. Trisodium salt of 2,4,6-trimercapto-5-triazine is added to cooling water systems to inhibit the corrosion of these metal surfaces.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 23, 1993
Date of Patent: August 30, 1994
    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: William J. Yorke, Edmund J. Bockowski
  • Patent number: 5271819
Abstract: A sensor electrode and method for detecting select characteristic in a liquid. The method utilizes filters and adsorbent materials to selectively remove contaminants in the liquid. The improvement comprises back flushing the filters and adsorbent material, once they become saturated, with specific solutions to wash away the select contaminants.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 2, 1992
Date of Patent: December 21, 1993
    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.
    Inventor: Edmund J. Bockowski

  • Patent number: 5171454
Abstract: Methods are provided for inhibiting the production of acid in acid mine waters by controlling the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the mine waters by adding an effective amount of acrolein. This will reduce acid mine drainage to other aqueous systems. The methods comprise adding from about 0.1 to about 10 parts acrolein per million parts of the mine water for which acid production inhibition is sought.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 19, 1991

    Assignee: Betz Laboratories, Inc.
Inventors: Edmund J. Bockowski, Cato R. McDaniel, Dwight P. Davis, Patric L. Friend
  • Patent number: 5079266
Abstract: This invention relates to the generation of acrolein from an acetal of acrolein via exposure to a sulfonic acid reusable catalytic material. The acrolein acetals have the following general structures; ##STR1## where R may or may not be equal to R' and R/R' is an alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbons; and ##STR2## where R is a cyclic diol derived from ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, pentylene glycol, hexylene glycol, glycerol hexoses or polysaccharides.
