    Abstract: The wear resistance and toughness of a cutting insert comprising a ceramic oxide is improved by applying to it a thin surface layer of ceramic oxide, deposited from a gaseous phase, in which surface layer the grains have a size smaller than 1 micron and preferably smaller than 0.5 micron.In effecting the deposition, at least one of the components of the gaseous phase is present therein in the highest concentration possible without formation of powder.
