    Abstract: A method of and apparatus for determining a position of a working original point at which working characteristics of a multi-joint manipulator are at optimum. According to the method and apparatus, a working point at which a hand mounted on the multi-joint manipulator works and a workspace needed for the work are assigned. Subsequently, a set of positions of the working original point of the multi-joint manipulator at which the hand may reach the workspace is calculated. Also, values of evaluation functions representative of preference of the working characteristics of the multi-joint manipulator are calculated with respect to the respective positions of the set. Then, the values of the evaluation functions are compared with each other, thereby selecting the position of the working original point at which the working characteristics are at optimum.

    Abstract: A suction duct having two opposed suction ports is disposed at the top wall of a shroud for a steel making arc furnace such that the two suction ports are in opposed relationship with respect to each other across an opening formed through the top wall of the shroud for permitting the lateral movement of a scrap bucket suspension device. An injection pipe or pipes are horizontally disposed in the suction port such that the injection pipes disposed in one of the suction ports are staggered vertically with respect to those disposed in the other suction port. A fluid is horizontally sprayed from a nozzle or nozzles of the injection pipes across the opening so that vertically spaced fluid shelves are formed across the opening.

The multiarticulated manipulator incorporated in a movable type remoted-controlled visual monitor system further includes a lens fixed to a forward end of the multijoint connecting mechanism, a fiberscope connected to the lens, and a movable member having the drive mounted therein and supporting the multijoint connecting mechanism, and a camera mounted in the movable member and connected to the lens through the fiberscope.

The cooling pipes may be arranged in ladder fashion or in a similar way, to keep the splash film stable, thereby preventing the decrease of the thermal efficiency of the furnace.
