  • Patent number: 7892210
Abstract: An improved apparatus, method and system are provided for medical liquid administration, including in particular liquid medication and/or flush solution infusions. The inventive apparatus includes a barrel, a plunger slidably disposed within the barrel and extending from a distal end thereof, and at least one medical liquid delivery line having a proximal end fixedly positioned relative to the barrel, wherein the medical delivery line is fluidly interconnectable proximal to the plunger and extends along at least a portion of the barrel and in a direction distally away from the distal end thereof. To accommodate the administration of both a liquid medication and flush solution, two coincidentally-positioned medical liquid delivery lines may be included, each of which may extend through the plunger to the valve. The valve may be positionable to accommodate the selective administration of a desired medical liquid through an interconnected catheter interconnection line.

  • Patent number: 6918902
Abstract: The in-line hand operated valve controls the flow of at least the irrigation fluid or suction to a surgical site. First and second sources provide fluid and suction to the valve. Valve body source ports communicate with the source lines and a delivery port communicates with a delivery line. The valve includes collapsible internal fluid carrying channels linking these ports. Each valve mechanism includes an operator control surface, a stem, and a compressor member acting on and closing and opening the collapsible channels. A biasing element keeps the stem and compressor either open or closed. A two position interlocking mechanical switch, coupled to the stem, is extended in the ON valve position and withdrawn in the OFF position. The method of providing a valve control utilizes these shape and click open and click close systems.

  • Patent number: 6899697
Abstract: The automatically controlled pump supplies pressurized irrigation fluid to a surgical site. The pump system includes a motor in a housing and a pump in a housing defining input and output ports. The pump has a rotatable impeller. The motor is powered by batteries. The system operates in conjunction with a downstream manual suction/irrigation control valve. In one system, an ON/OFF motor switch is controlled by fluid flow above a nominal flow by a sensor typically mounted downstream of the pump. In another, flow is detected by a negative buoyancy poppet having a “leaky” valve seat. When the poppet moves, its position is sensed and the switched motor is ON. In a remote control system, the motor is remotely controlled by a switch integrated into the manual control valve. One method automatically controls a pump by monitoring fluid flow above a system minimal flow and turning ON/OFF the motor based upon flow above the minimum.

  • Patent number: 6635031
Abstract: The automatically controlled pump includes a battery-powered motor with a housing, a pump in a housing with input and output ports. A switch turns ON and OFF the motor due to fluid pressure at the output. Sometimes, the pump housing is below the motor housing and below the battery housing. The input port is beneath the impeller and the output port. A version also includes a manual ON and OFF switch actuated by an operator and a check valve limiting upstream flow of the pressurized fluid. The fluid pressure sensitive switch is mounted downstream of the check valve. An irrigation surgical kit includes the automatically controlled pump, a spike for a fluid source bag, fluid lines and an operator controlled valve unit disposed at or near the surgical site. The method monitors fluid pressure at or near the pump's output and turns ON and OFF the motor.

  • Patent number: 6494876
Abstract: A disposable liposuction device and method. A piston is caused to reciprocate by operating a single valve. The electrical energy for operating the valve is provided by an electric timing circuit that is powered by a battery. The energy provided by the battery is predetermined so that the energy is depleted after about the time required for one liposuction procedure.

  • Publication number: 20020123722
Abstract: The in-line hand operated valve controls the flow of at least one, and preferably both, irrigation fluid and suction respectively to and from a surgical site via a delivery line. In one working embodiment, suction fluid is supplied to the valve via a first source line and suction is supplied to the valve via a second source line. The valve body defines, source ports in fluid communication with the source lines and a delivery port in fluid communication with the delivery line. The valve body includes at least one, and preferably two, collapsible internal fluid carrying channels in fluid communication with the respective source port and the delivery port. Each valve mechanism includes an operator control surface, a stem, and a compressor member acting on and closing and opening the collapsible segment of the fluid carrying channel or body. A biasing element (such as a spring or other resilient body) keeps the valve stem and the compressor element in either an open or a closed state.

  • Patent number: 6375625
Abstract: The in-line specimen trap operates in conjunction with a suction or irrigation line and a second line leading to a surgical site. The trap includes a specimen container, a cap coupled to the specimen container and an operator controlled, multi-modal valve disposed in or on the cap. The valve includes at least a bypass passage and a container input port and a container output port. The bypass passage limits flow exclusively between the first and second lines, that is, between the suction/irrigation line and the line leading to the surgical site. The position of an operator control interface determines the selection of the bypass mode or trap and collection mode. The method establishes, under operator control, a bypass channel between the first and second lines channels under operator control, the specimen fluid and debris from the second line through the specimen container to the first line, and, closes the specimen container after the channeling step.

  • Publication number: 20010039398
Abstract: The automatically controlled pump supplies pressurized irrigation fluid via an output line to a surgical site. The pump is coupled to a fluid source via an input line. The pump system includes a motor, a motor housing, a pump disposed within a pump housing and fluid input and fluid output ports defined by the pump housing. The pump has a rotatably disposed impeller coupled to the motor. The input and output lines are respectively coupled to the fluid input and output ports. The motor is powered by at least one battery and preferably a plurality of batteries. A switch turns ON and OFF the motor and is controlled by fluid flow above a system minimal flow. • Patent number: 6148857
Abstract: A combination suction and irrigation fluid supply valve assembly includes a first body part with an axial passage and opposed bosses and second and third body parts mounted on the first body part and supporting respective spool type closure members for controlling flow of irrigation fluid and aspiration of fluids through a medical instrument connected to the valve assembly. The fluid supply closure member includes differential areas to provide for fluid pressure biasing of the closure member in a closed position and the suction closure member includes a substantial groove formed therein to provide unobstructed flow of debris laden fluid through the valve assembly. Connector assemblies are connected to the opposed bosses on the body to provide connection to a medical instrument while minimizing unwanted disconnection from the instrument.

  • Patent number: 6062429
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting and forcibly discharging flexible irrigation fluid bags under controlled pressure includes a body having a recess formed therein slightly inclined to the vertical and cooperating with brackets at the lower end of the recess to support and retain a bag therein and wherein the bag discharge conduits depend from the body between the brackets. A door is hinged to the body and movable to a closed position for engaging the bag during forcible deflection of the bag to discharge fluid therefrom. An inflatable bladder is supported in the recess in the body and is connected to a source of pressure air at a cylindrical ported plug and providing for disconnection of the bladder from the plug in response to an overpressure condition. Pressure air is supplied to the inflatable bladder by way of a control circuit including a rapid opening high volume air supply and exhaust valve for quickly venting the inflation chamber.
