    Abstract: An apparatus for welding together coaxial tube sections which utilizes a welding electrode housing and a mounting housing. The welding electrode housing is to be clamped onto the tube sections and hold them in an abutting, coaxially aligned position. The welding electrode housing is then to be fixedly mounted onto the mounting housing with the welding procedure then being initiated. The mounting housing includes a structure required to produce the welding operation. The mounting housing is connectable to different welding electrode housings, each of which is to connect with a different size of tube to be welded.

    Abstract: An apparatus for welding together coaxial tube sections which includes a main housing within which is located a through opening within which is to be located the coaxial tube sections to be welded. A welding electrode is mounted within the main housing to be rotatable about the tube sections to effect the welding procedure. The welding electrode is mounted on a deflectable welding electrode mounting member which is to be moved to cause the welding electrode to physically contact the tubes in the welding area and then to be movable to cause the welding electrode to assume a spaced position establishing the desired welding arc. The coaxial tube sections are snugly held in position through the use of a metallic clamping plate arrangement. This clamping plate arrangement has formed therein a series of slots which is to provide for increased expansion of the size of the through opening so as to permit mounting of the tube welder on a greater size variance of tubes to be welded.

    Abstract: A track assembly for mounting a welding head assembly onto a pipe for the purpose of welding the pipe. The track assembly includes a flexible annular base which is to be located about the pipe in close proximity to the exterior surface of the pipe but spaced therefrom. Located between the annular base and the pipe are a plurality of spaced-apart foot pad assemblies. Each foot pad assembly includes a pair of contact pads which function to exert a continuous spring force between the annular base and the pipe. Each contact pad is connected to a separate spring assembly which can be mutually adjusted to vary the amount of spring force between the flexible annular base and the pipe. Mounted on the exterior surface of the annular base is a track which is to connect with the welding head assembly upon which the welding head operates to move circumferentially about the pipe. A latching assembly in the form of an over-center latching mechanism is used to secure together the free ends of the annular base.

    Abstract: A welding head base to facilitate the mounting of a welding head assembly thereon for the purpose of welding a joint between abutted ends of a pipe. The base is mounted on the edges of a thin, sheet material, continuous band track and is capable of low frictional movement, through a series of wheel assemblies, relative to the track. Each wheel assembly includes a wheel with each wheel including an enlarged flange to facilitate the mounting of the welding head base onto the track. Mounted on the fixed section of the base is a sprocket assembly with a sprocket wheel that is to be rotatably driven by a motor. The sprocket is to engage with a series of gear teeth formed within the track. The sprocket assembly is to be movable from an operating position (in engagement with the track) to a retracted position (spacing the sprocket wheel from the track). Movement of the sprocket assembly is caused through the use of a manually operated cam assembly.

A drive gear is to engage with the gear engaging slots. The drive gear is flexibly mounted on the welding head housing so as to be continuously biased into positive engagement with the gear engaging slots.

    Abstract: A tube sheet welding apparatus for the rear or back face of a tube sheet. The welding head apparatus includes a welding head housing with an internal opening therethrough. The particular tube to be welded is to be located through the internal opening. The welding head housing is to be separatable into two separate halves and to be clamped tightly onto the tube to be welded. The welding electrode is mounted within a welding electrode housing which is located within the welding head housing. The welding electrode, as well as the welding electrode housing, is rotated through a gear assembly to complete the welding operation of the tube to the tube sheet. After welding, the welding head housing is split apart permitting separation of such from the tube that has now been welded permitting movement of the welding head housing to another tube that is then to be welded. Inert gas is to be supplied to the welded area through an inert gas passage assembly located within the welding head housing.

    Abstract: The welding head assembly for welding together a pair of cylindrical tubes wherein one of the tubes protrude along with a mass of other similar tubes from a tube sheet. To precisely locate the welding head position at an exact position for each and every produced weld there is utilized a locator plate assembly which is to be fixedly mounted a precise distance from the tube sheet directly on to the tube which protrudes from the tube sheet. The locator plate assembly includes a position locator mechanism which connects with the face of the tube sheet to precisely locate the locator plate assembly a precise distance from the tube sheet. A location gage assembly is to connect with the locator plate assembly to initially establish the desired position for the locator plate assembly. Upon removal of the location gage assembly from the locator plate assembly, a welding head is to be engaged with the locator plate assembly.

    Abstract: A welding apparatus which includes a welding electrode and a filler wire assembly. The welding electrode and the filler wire assembly are fixed together and are to move along a weld path on a workpiece. The weld path may either take a regular or an irregular shape. The welding electrode is mounted on a welding electrode bracket which is rotatably mounted on a rotational axis upon a housing. The rotational axis of the filler wire assembly in respect to the welding electrode is precisely controlled so that just the tip of the filler wire is continuously located just forward (along the weld path) of the tip of the welding electrode regardless of the direction of movement of the welding electrode along the weld path. Three dimensional, preprogrammed movement along an X-axis, a Y-axis and a Z-axis can occur between the welding electrode and the workpiece. The welding electrode is also permitted an additional amount of limited movement along the Z-axis which is not programmed.

    Abstract: A tube welding apparatus for the front face of a tube sheet. The welding apparatus includes a welding head housing from which protrudes a securing mandrel assembly. The mandrel assembly is to be positioned within the tube that is to be welded. The securing mandrel assembly includes a ball assembly which is to be movable to an extended position in tight contact with the interior wall of the tube. The welding electrode is to be selectively mountable in any one of various positions within a welding electrode mounting housing which is located within the welding head housing. The different positions of mounting the electrode physically orient the electrode at slightly different angles with respect to the weld area. Inert gas is to be supplied to the weld area through a gas discharge passage assembly. Included within the welding head housing is a gas diffuser to facilitate even dispursement of the gas about the tip of the welding electrode.

    Abstract: A mounting fixture for an automatic welding apparatus for precisely centering the rotating welding electrode within the welding area. The mounting fixture is mounted onto a portion of the workpiece adjacent the welding area. An indexing device is connected to the welding fixture housing which is to determine the precise location for the welding electrode. The mounting fixture is to be movable a limited amount determined by the position of the indexing device. Once the precise position of the indexing device and the mounting fixture has been obtained, the mounting fixture is fixed with respect to the workpiece. An automatic welding head is then mounted on the mounting fixture and the now precisely located welding electrode is then to be utilized to produce the desired weld.

    Abstract: The method of and apparatus for welding of a pair of in-line pipes which utilizes a pair of insert rings. Initially, in the root area of the weld there is located an inner insert ring, which is welded to the pair of abutting pipes by a root welding path. An outer insert ring which is constructed of two identical pieces is located exteriorly about the inner insert ring between the pair of in-line pipes. The outer insert ring includes a laterally extending flange which is to be tack welded to the exterior surface of the pipe which is abuts. The main section of the outer insert ring is then melted to fuse together the pipes. The tack welding of the flange to the pipes keeps the main section of the outer insert ring located between the abutted edges of the in-line pipes.

    Abstract: A confined space welding apparatus which is to interiorly weld a tube to a structure such as a wall of an enlarged chamber. The position of the weld bead is initially determined through a set gage. This set gage is then employed to accurately position the welding electrode within the welding apparatus. The welding apparatus is includes collapsible handles to facilitate insertion of the welding apparatus within the enlarged chamber. The collapsible handles are then moved to their extended operable position and then the welding apparatus is securely clamped within a conduit positioning the welding electrode at the area to be welded.

    Abstract: A welding apparatus for pipes which provides for a guide means which is to be fixedly secured to the pipe adjacent the welding area, a first carriage and a second carriage is movably supported upon the guide means with each of the carriages supporting a pair of spaced apart welding heads. Attached to the guide means is a driving chain. Mounted on each of the carriages are motor means which, in turn, operate through the driving chain to move the carriages in a prescribed manner with respect to the guide means. The welding heads of each of the carriages move within the same plane but each are movable in a separate one hundred and eighty degree arc thereby forming a continuous circle. Associated with each welding head is a weld groove tracking system which automatically maintains each welding head correctly aligned within the welding groove. The entire apparatus of this invention, when combined with appropriate electronic computer equipment, automatically welds an adjoined pair of piping sections.

    Abstract: A welding apparatus which is designed to weld together tubular members having any exterior configuration. The welding electrode is mounted on mounting structure which in turn is movably mounted upon the periphery of a housing. The workpiece to be welded is fixedly secured and centrally disposed within the housing. The welding head is to move about the workpiece and also tilt in respect thereto to maintain the longitudinal center axis of the welding electrode continuously perpendicular to the workpiece surface. Step motors are employed to both drive the welding head about the workpiece and also tilt the welding head with respect to the workpiece. The particular exterior configuration of the workpiece has been preprogramed into a memory unit. The memory unit operates through an electronic circuit to operate the step motors to locate the welding head at the precise desired location along the entire length of the welding path.
