  • Patent number: 5623741
Abstract: A vehicle finishing apparatus provided with a vehicle finishing pad having slits cut in the pad in patterns other than parallel, straight and perpendicular to the brush axis so that the individual pad strips make finishing contact with the vehicle surface over an area having a transverse width which is greater than the strip width. The slits in a preferred embodiment are cut in a curved fashion, thereby creating a longer edge surface on the strips and increasing the transverse contact area with the vehicle surface as well as improved edge contact with the vehicle surface.

  • Patent number: 4756044
Abstract: A rotatable tire brush for a vehicle washing apparatus, which brush includes a plurality of abrasive bristles defining a first cylindrical array, and a plurality of nonabrasive bristles defining a second cylindrical array. The abrasive and nonabrasive bristles are dispersed in a uniform pattern throughout the first and second cylindrical arrays, and the outer diameter of the second cylindrical array is greater than the outer diameter of the first array. The tip ends of the nonabrasive bristles are preferably flagged to provide the brush with an outer fluffy layer.

  • Patent number: 4653135
Abstract: A vehicle finishing apparatus having a rotary support, and a plurality of finishing units mounted on the support in spaced relationship therearound. Each finishing unit includes a thin sheetlike pad structure of flexible material having an outer free edge adapted to contact a vehicle, and an inner edge positioned adjacent the periphery of the support. Mounting structure cooperates between the support and the pad structure for releasably securing the pad structure to the support and for selectively varying the point of attachment thereof to the support to vary the length of the pad structure which projects outwardly from the support. The mounting structure includes a plurality of identical mounting parts fixedly associated with the pad structure in substantially parallel but closely spaced relationship in the vicinity of the inner edge but progressively spaced therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4567619
Abstract: A vehicle finishing apparatus having a rotary drum provided with a plurality of flexible finishing units removably secured around the periphery thereof. The finishing units comprise enlarged cloth pads having a plurality of substantially parallel mounting portions formed integrally of the pad adjacent the inner edge thereof, each mounting portion, which is preferably formed by deforming the pad to create a closed loop, is adapted to be removably positioned within an outwardly opening groove formed on the periphery of the drum and extending lengthwise thereof. The different loops are progressively positioned in the mounting groove as the outer edge of the pad becomes worn so as to adjust the pad length.

  • Patent number: 4142267
Abstract: A rotary brush construction comprised of a drumlike frame having a plurality of replaceable, semi-cylindrical, bristle-carrying sections removably attached thereto. The brush sections are mounted in opposed pairs on the frame. The means attaching the brush sections to the frame can be easily removed and replaced.

  • Patent number: 4130911
Abstract: Mounting means for a rotary brush. Mounting means are provided for a rotary brush, such as is used in streat cleaning equipment or in a car wash, wherein stub shafts are arranged in connection with a brush core for mounting the brush onto suitable support and driving means. The mounting means provides firm and rigid support together with positive protection for the end of the brush when assembled into operative position and can be quickly removed for replacement of the brush portion as desired. In the preferred embodiment, a plate is rigidly fixed coaxially within a brush core and a generallyhat-shaped fitting is placed against each end, the crown portion of such fitting being received into the core of the brush and bearing against said plate and the brim portion thereof lying against an axial end of the brush for protection of same. A stub shaft has a flange fixed thereto and bolts extend through said flange, the crown portion of said hat-shaped fitting and into said plate for holding the assembly together.

  • Patent number: 3971097
Abstract: A separable stub shaft connection for a rotatable surface treating member, such as a brush, having a tubular hub. The connection includes a stub shaft having a preselected length thereof projecting into one end of the hub. A pair of diametrically opposed but axially spaced bearing areas create a secure engagement between the hub and stub shaft when bolted together. Appropriate clearances are provided to permit the shaft and hub to be angularly tilted through at least a limited extent relative to one another so that the stub shaft and hub can be relatively axially displaced when the hub is to be mounted on or removed from the stub shaft. The other end of the hub is mounted on a further stub shaft connection which permits the other end of the hub to be moved transversely relative to the stub shaft. For this purpose, the other end of the hub has a separable arcuate sector which extends through an angle of approximately 180.degree..

  • Patent number: 3942211
Abstract: A rotary brush construction, particularly for washing vehicles, having a pair of spaced collars mounted upon a shaft and supporting a plurality of elongated bristle holding members arranged in a cylindrical pattern concentric with the shaft. Each collar has an annular flange extending axially thereof, which flange has a plurality of circumferentially spaced slots extending axially inwardly from the free end thereof. The flanges of the collars are directed so that the slots formed in the plurality of collars all open axially in the same direction. Each bristle holding member has fastening elements, such as threaded fasteners, mounted on and positioned so as to be slidably received within a corresponding slot formed on a collar for permitting the bristle holding member to be fixedly secured to the collar.

  • Patent number: 3939521
Abstract: A rotary brush construction, particularly for a top brush for washing vehicles including elongate bristles carried on a perforate hollow cylindrical core of relatively small diameter. A plurality of axially short collar units secure the core on a shaft for rotation therewith and are spaced along the inside of the core. The collars each comprise a hub fixed to the shaft and, in one embodiment, a shell radially spaced from the hub by radial web members, for carrying the core. Tension members extend from the hub through the shell and hold the core to the shell. The collars occupy minimal cross-sectional area within the core. Lubricant liquid streams enter the opposite core ends and pass inward through the collars for substantially uniform distribution of liquid within the core. The liquid passes out through the core perforations to lubricate the bristles. The core preferably comprises plural longitudinal sections having differing bristle densities.
