  • Patent number: 6120632
Abstract: A method for making an absorbent article having a transverse partition including the following steps: a) providing a first web of barrier leg cuff material having a generally uniform width in a machine direction; b) providing a second webs of barrier leg cuff material in a machine direction generally parallel to the first web of barrier leg cuff material; c) activating at least a portion of said first webs so as to provide an activated region which is extensible in at least said lateral direction; d) providing a transverse partition having a proximal edge and a distal edge; e) joining at least a portion of the transverse partition adjacent the distal edge to the first webs of barrier leg cuff material adjacent to the activated region of the first web of barrier leg cuff material; f) providing a third web of topsheet material; g) joining at least a portion of each of the first and second webs of leg cuff material to the third web of topsheet material; h) providing a fourth web including an absorbent material d

  • Patent number: 5346486
Abstract: An improved sanitary napkin is disclosed. The sanitary napkin has a laterally extensible flap which extends outwardly from one of the longitudinal edges of the sanitary napkin or a laterally extensible backsheet. The backsheet or flap may be laterally extended from the neutral, retracted position and will return to the retracted position upon release of the disturbing force. This arrangement provides the advantage that any adhesive strips or patches associated with the flaps or backsheet more easily move with the undergarment of the wearer and are less likely to be stressed or become detached from the undergarment of the wearer due to the forces encountered during typical wearer movements.

  • Patent number: 5324278
Abstract: A disposable absorbent article, such as a sanitary napkin, is disclosed that has components which may separate in the Z-direction with relation to other components of the article when the absorbent article is worn. The sanitary napkin of the present invention comprises a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet, an absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet, and a liquid pervious spacing structure for moving the topsheet away from the core. The spacing structure is generally positioned between the topsheet and the core. The spacing structure has a longitudinal centerline, and opposed lateral sides which may move inwardly toward the longitudinal centerline when the spacing is compressed from the sides. This results in at least a portion of the spacing structure moving the topsheet apart from the absorbent core. In an alternative embodiment, the sanitary napkin of the present invention also has an absorbent core which separates from the backsheet of the sanitary napkin.

  • Patent number: 5134007
Abstract: Absorbent articles such as disposable diapers, incontinent pads, sanitary napkins and the like that have multiple layer absorbent cores that are suitable for acquiring and containing liquids in an especially effective and efficient manner.

  • Patent number: 4988344
Abstract: Absorbent articles such as disposable diapers, incontinent pads, sanitary napkins and the like that have multiple layer absorbent cores that are suitable for acquiring and containing liquids in an especially effective and efficient manner. The absorbent core comprises multiple layers including a first layer comprising hydrophilic fibrous material and having an acquisition zone of a relatively lower average density than the other portions of the first layer so that it quickly acquires discharged liquids; a liquid handling layer comprising a resilient material that is moisture insensitive so as to rapidly acquire liquid into itself through the acquisition zone and distribute the liquid throughout the liquid handling layer to a storage layer and the first layer; and a storage layer comprising a combination of fibrous material and discrete particles of absorbent gelling material that contains and stores the liquids deposited onto the absorbent core and allows the liquid handling layer to be .-+.

  • Patent number: 4988345
Abstract: Absorbent articles such as disposable diapers, incontinent pads, sanitary napkins and the like that have absorbent cores that are suitable for rapidly acquiring and containing liquid in an especially effective and efficient manner. The absorbent core comprises a storage layer comprising hydrophilic fibrous material and discrete particles of absorbent gelling material and having an acquisition aperture so it can quickly acquire this discharged liquid; and a liquid handling layer comprising a resilient material that is mositure insensitive so to rapidly acquire liquids into itself through the acquisition aperture and distribute the liquid throughout the liquid handling layer to the storage layer. The storage layer also allows the liquid handling layer to be "drained" of the liquid that is acquired so that the liquid handling layer may have sufficient capacity to acquire and distribute subsequent loading of liquids.

  • Patent number: 4681580
Abstract: Disposable diapers having liquid impermeable waistshields and elastically expansible waistbands. The waistshields and waistbands are formed of a single--unitary--liquid impermeable material. In preferred embodiments, the waistshield/waistband is formed of a material which has a heat unstable state and a heat stable and elastic state. In diapers ready for use, the waistband portion is relatively more heat stable and elastic than the waistshield portion.
