Abstract: Compounds, physiologically acceptable salts of the compounds and pharmaceutical compositions containing the compounds or the salts are provided wherein the compounds have a formula of: ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.5 .omega.-hydroxy-n-alkyl group or a C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 (.omega.-1)-hydroxy-n-alkyl group, R.sub.3 is a C.sub.1-C.sub.4 alkyl group, R.sub.8 is H, methyl, or ethyl and the sum of the carbon atoms in R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 is between 4 and 9 and provide inotropic (cardiotonic) activity.

Abstract: Carnosic acid is obtained by extracting sage and rosemary with an apolar solvent, contacting the extract with an adsorbent material to separate carnosic acid from apolar compounds of the extract, desorbing the adsorbent with a polar solvent and then evaporating the solvent to obtain a residue containing carnosic acid. The carnosic acid contained in the residue may be purified by crystallizing it from the residue.

Abstract: Cosmetic composition.This composition contains, as active compound in a suitable cosmetic carrier, at least one 1-hydroxyalkylxanthine of formula: ##STR1## Use for its slimming and anticellulitic action.

Abstract: An antioxidant composition is obtained by subjecting a spice to at least one extraction with a non-polar solvent, after which the residue from the spice thus extracted is subjected to at least one extraction with a polar solvent and the extract obtained from each extraction with the polar solvent is concentrated and dried to obtain the antioxidant. Additionally, the extract obtained from the non-polar solvent extractions may be mixed with a basic aqueous solution, after which the aqueous phase of the mixture is acidified and then extracted with dichloromethane, and the extract so obtained may be combined with the extract obtained from the polar solvent extractions, concentrated and then dried.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 1,3,7-trialkyl xanthines, i.e. xanthines completely substituted on the nitrogen atoms, by the N-alkylation of xanthines by phase transfer catalysis. Some of the trialkyl xanthines obtained are new and di(3,7-dimethylxanthin-1-yl)methane is described as a medicament having immunosupressant properties.

Abstract: The invention relates to 1-isopropyl- and 1-isobutyl-3,7-dimethyl xanthines as medicaments. They have a sedative effect comparable with that of a standard neuroleptic.
