  • Publication number: 20070286187
Abstract: Apparatuses for simultaneous multiple telephone type services on a single telephone line are disclosed. One apparatus is connectable to a subscriber line and comprises address logic, a plain old telephone system (POTS) interface, a transceiver, and a host interface. The address logic is configured to determine an address assigned to the apparatus. The assigned address is unique on the subscriber line. The POTS interface is connectable to the subscriber line and configured to communicate on the subscriber line within a POTS frequency band. The transceiver is connectable to the subscriber line and configured to communicate on the subscriber line using the assigned address and a frequency band higher than a POTS frequency band. The host interface is connectable to a device which receives one of a plurality of services over the subscriber line. The received service uses the assigned address and the frequency band higher than the POTS frequency band.

  • Patent number: 7289610
Abstract: The preferred embodiments of the present invention generally provide improved communications over a subscriber loop that is loaded with at least one and potentially a plurality of load coils. The preferred embodiments of the present invention will work over loaded subscriber loops that also support a native POTS interface as well as over loaded subscriber loops that are not providing a native POTS interface. Furthermore, although the preferred embodiments of the present invention are intended to address the technical and business problems of service providers delivering digital subscriber line service over loaded loops, the preferred embodiments will also work over unloaded loops.

  • Publication number: 20070047733
Abstract: A crosstalk compensator provides for the compensation of mismatches in mutual coupling capacitances between adjacent parallel wire pairs. The aforementioned mismatch in mutual coupling capacitance may arise in a customer premises wiring system which may consist of at least the drop cable, cable run and/or receiver cable (from the service drop point to a digital device). Mismatches in the mutual coupling capacitances in the customer premises wiring system may give rise to undesirable levels of premises end crosstalk (PEXT) interference for which the crosstalk compensator has been designed to mitigate by providing a system and method for the connection of compensating capacitors between pairs of conductors selected from the plurality of subscriber loop conductors such that the mismatch is reduced or eliminated. The crosstalk compensator may be implemented in a variety of formats, including firmware or program code residing on a computer-readable medium, hardware, or a combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 7155016
Abstract: A communication device for use in a non-self synchronizing scrambling (NS3) communication system and a method for using NS3 in a communication system are disclosed. A digital data stream is scrambled by modifying the digital data stream based on a pseudo-noise sequence (PNS) to produce a scrambled digital data stream. The PNS has a timing reference that is distinct from the digital data stream. The scrambled digital data stream is capable of being descrambled by performing an inverse modification, based on the same PNS and the same timing reference. The scrambled digital data stream may be transmitted over a communication medium and descrambled at the opposing end of the communication medium. Synchronization between the scrambler and the descrambler is maintained by providing a common timing reference to the scrambler and the descrambler. The common timing reference is distinct from the data stream.

  • Patent number: 7130338
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for communicating data over a subscriber loop using a modem. One such method includes: transmitting data on the loop in a first frequency band; sensing an indication that simultaneous transmission on the loop in a POTS frequency band is imminent; and adjusting transmit power in the first band, in response to the sensing step. One such system includes an input/output connection in communication with the loop, a processor operable in at least two states, a means for sensing demand for simultaneous usage of the loop, and a means for controlling the state. The first state is characterized by a first transmit power spectrum in the first band. The second state is characterized by a second transmit power spectrum in the first band, reduced relative to the first spectrum. Upon sensing demand, the control means causes the processor to operate in the second state.

  • Publication number: 20060193465
Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for transmitting a data-bearing signal and a non-data-bearing signal. One embodiment comprises communicatively coupling a data-bearing signal during a first time period and communicatively coupling a non-data-bearing signal during a second time period. The data-bearing signal has a first PSD. The non-data-bearing signal has a second PSD substantially the same as the first over a range of frequencies. The non-data-bearing signal has characteristics facilitating echo cancellation. Another embodiment comprises a line interface and a transmitter coupled to the line interface, comprising a data encoder and a periodic signal generator. The encoder is configured to produce a data-bearing signal with a first PSD. The periodic signal generator is configured to produce a non-data-bearing signal with a second PSD. The second PSD is substantially the same as the first PSD over a first range of frequencies.

  • Publication number: 20060195712
Abstract: The present invention provides for a system and method for reducing power consumption in frame and cell data transmission systems. A transmitter power manager powers down (turns off) selected elements of a transmitter system during periods of transmitter inactivity. The transmitter power manager system detects incoming communication signals which are to be transmitted by the transmitter, and at the appropriate time, powers up (turns on) the selected elements which are controlled by the transmitter power manager.

  • Publication number: 20060188088
Abstract: The present invention provides for a system and method for blocking leakage signals and uncoupling connections in a communication system. A leakage signal (LS) blocking splitter employs a high-pass filter which effectively blocks the lower frequency leakage signal. The high-pass filter (an LS filter) has a cut-off frequency selected to fall between the upper range of the leakage signal (which is approximately 4 KHz in the preferred embodiment) and the low-end frequency of a data signal. A detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to which each one of the leakage signal (LS) filters are coupled to. The detect and terminate function detects service on the communication connection to ensure that each LS blocking splitter is coupled to an in-service communication connection.

  • Patent number: 7065205
Abstract: The eavesdropping prevention system and method of the present invention provides for shunting leakage signals in a communication system. The amplifier-based coupler is constructed with amplifiers configured with a nearly-zero impedance path which effectively prevents the propagation of a leakage signal onto other communication connections which are coupled to the same communication device. Leakage signals are attenuated due to the nearly-zero impedance path, rather than propagating through the higher impedance communication connections.

  • Patent number: 6970501
Abstract: The present invention provides a communication device, such as a modem, that is capable of detecting whether it is capable of operating in a mode that is compatible with one or more of the Spectrum Management Classes. The modem automatically selects a mode of operation that is compliant with one or more of the Spectrum Management Classes. The communication device also determines whether it is capable of operating in multiple modes that are compliant with multiple Spectrum Management Classes, and is capable of selecting the modes of operation that optimize the performance of the communication device. Furthermore, the communication device is capable of determining when it is not capable of operating in a mode that is compliant with at least one of the Spectrum Management Classes and which prevents operation of itself upon determining that it is not capable of operating in a mode that is compliant with at least one of the Spectrum Management Classes.
