The OFDM symbols may be OFDM or OFDMA, and may or may not include a cyclic prefix, which will have a different length from the pseudo-extension.

    Abstract: A profile optimizing method is provided for a downstream channel transmission of active subcarriers to user devices. The method includes steps of receiving channel measurement data from each user device for each subcarrier, calculating a maximum bit-loading value for each user device per subcarrier, grouping the user devices into a plurality of clusters based on a proximity of the maximum bit-loading values of a first user device to those of a second user device within the particular cluster, assigning each user device within the particular cluster to a single cluster profile. A plurality of single cluster profiles for the plurality of clusters forms a set of cluster profiles. The method further includes steps of determining a channel capacity ratio for the set of cluster profiles, and combining at least two single profiles of the set of cluster profiles into a coalesced profile pair.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method of interleaving information units in order to provide improved error control. A communication device codes the information units, subdivides the coded information units into multiple subsets, reorders each of the multiple subsets, and interlaces the multiple reordered subsets to produce a set of interleaved coded information units. By reordering and interlacing the subsets, the impact of burst errors is diminished and the coded information units are formatted to take advantage of the different levels of error protection provided to the various bits underlying a symbol assigned by a symbol mapper.

    Abstract: A method of transmitting voice coding information is provided. First and second frames of voice coding information are provided. Each frame is then prioritized based on which bits need to be forward-error corrected, thus forming first and second prioritized frames. A six-bit CRC value is then computed based on the prioritized first and second frames. The six-bit CRC value is then split into first and second 3-bit CRC units. The first CRC unit is then combined with the first prioritized frame to form a modified first frame, and the second CRC unit is then combined with the second prioritized frame to form a modified second frame. The modified first and second frames are each then error correction coded to form first and second sets of symbols, respectively. The first and second set of symbols are then interleaved into a transmission unit, which is then transmitted.
