Patent number: 5974214Abstract: The invention provides a waveguide connector assembly for the precision interconnection of mating arrays of parallel optical waveguides which are preferably photolithographically formed on substrates. The connector assembly has a base with several parallel channel walls cut along a surface of the base. A waveguide assembly is positioned on the base. The waveguide assembly comprises a substrate and several transparent, polymeric waveguides on and raised from a surface of the substrate. The waveguides have a polygonal cross section with flat edges. The waveguide assembly is positioned on the base such that each of the waveguides is set in one of the channels and contacts the walls of the channel at two or more points. A cover plate holds the waveguide assembly on the base.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1997Date of Patent: October 26, 1999Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Lawrence W. Shacklette, Gregory J. Patent number: 5179607Abstract: An adapter for coupling a fiber optic connector has a terminus and a throat area provided with a fluted region. Mating connectors are aligned with the terminus by the fluted region. The adapter is injection molded as a single piece using polymeric materials and accommodates fiber optic connectors having tips in the form of right circular cylinders. The insertion force required between two connector tips during alignment is substantially reduced, minimizing damage to the fiber end-faces.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1991Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Assignee: Forss, Inc.Inventors: Gregory J. Patent number: 4246785Abstract: The effectiveness of thermal insulation of barriers, such as walls, floors, or ceilings of a residence, is assessed by measuring the effective values of insulation or R values, of thermal barriers. Suitable devices and procedures for utilizing such devices are provided. The R values so measured can be compared with those suggested for economic insulation in such sources as government publications to determine the desirability of augmenting existing insulation. The device comprises a holder and a temperature sensor and indicator means supported on a support slidably mounted in the holder. In one embodiment, a single device combines measurement of thermal insulation and comparison with suggested values for economic insulation. A direct measurement of whether installed insulation is adequate is thus provided.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1979Date of Patent: January 27, 1981Inventors: Gregory J. Sellers, Gerald R. Bretts
