Abstract: A workflow manager handles the communication between a workflow-enabled provider and a workflow-enabled client. The workflow manager maintains a directory of clients, translates a transaction from a provider into multiple transactions suitable for the client, and handles security. In one embodiment, the workflow manager connects with the workflow-enabled client by registration and with the workflow-enabled provider by advertising and activation. Subsequent communications between the workflow manager and the workflow-enabled provider and the workflow-enabled client are with a request/response protocol. The workflow manager also comprises data storage for storing data for transmission to the workflow-enabled client or the workflow-enabled provider, and workflow storage for storing information related to registered clients. The present invention also includes a number of novel methods including a method for a method for registering a client and a method for activating a provider.

Abstract: A workflow-enabled client comprises a client and a workflow manager interface unit. The workflow manager interface unit couples the client to a workflow manager to provide the automatic discovering, distributed processing and dynamic user interface generating functionality of the present invention. A communication manager of the workflow-enabled client has a registration unit that registers, and unregisters, the client with the workflow manager such as by providing a name, a data and other commands. A polling module uses a received location from the workflow manager to retrieve data. The process control module performs a plurality of processing functions such a processing polled data, storing it or providing it to other clients. The process control module can also initiate other clients. The present invention also includes a number of novel methods including a method for registering a client, a method for polling data, and a method for initiating other clients.

Abstract: A printing system enables the printing of enhanced documents using a semantic classification scheme. A printing system receives an image to be printed. The system classifies the image according to the semantic classification scheme and, based on this classification, performs enhancement processing on the image. Depending on the desired application, the printing system may recognize and classify any number of image types and may then perform various enhancement processing functions on the image, where the type of enhancement processing performed is based on the classification of the image.

Abstract: Techniques for printing stored or recorded information that may include information of one or more types and may be stored in one or more multimedia documents. A graphical user interface (GUI) is provided that facilitates printing of information stored by the one or more multimedia documents or portions of the information stored by the one or more multimedia documents.

Abstract: The system includes an image display system, a direct annotation creation module, an annotation display module, a vocabulary comparison module and a dynamic updating module. These modules are coupled together by a bus and provide for the direct multi-modal annotation of media of media objects. The direct annotation creation module creates annotation objects. The annotation display module works in cooperation with the image display system to display the annotations themselves or graphic representations of the annotation positioned relative to the images of the objects. The system automatically creates the annotation, associates it with the selected images, and displays either a graphic representation of the annotation or a text translation of the audio input.

Abstract: A system for converting a collection of data to a structured, printable and navigable document includes: an analyzer and a layout unit. The analyzer is coupled to receive a data collection source such as a web page associated with a wiki and other user parameters, and generates a representation of content associated with the data collection source. The output of the analyzer is coupled to an input of the layout unit to provide the representation of content. The layout unit is also coupled to receive a style sheet or other user preferences. The linearizer of the layout unit retrieves the necessary content using the representation of content. The retrieved content is then formatted by the layout selector of the layout unit to generate a paginated document and metadata. This output can then be printed on any conventional printer or manipulated and interacted with using applications or a web browser.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for interfacing a personal digital assistant (PDA) with a communications appliance is provided. The method comprising a communication station receiving semi-structured data from a personal digital assistant (PDA) in a format native to the PDA, and parsing the semi-structured data to identify a type of the semi-structured data. If the semi-structured data is destination data, sending a job to a destination indicated by the semi-structured data.

Abstract: A method and apparatus to receive an image and to create a smaller representation of the image from a wavelet representation of the image is described. The size of the smaller representation of the image is selected to compensate for the content of the image and physical properties of the display device to display the smaller representation of the image.

Abstract: A method and system that organize and retrieve multimedia objects. A controller may select an identifier associated with a media object to send a request to play the media object. The controller may send the request by transmitting the identifier stored in the controller. An appliance receives the request from the controller. The appliance retrieves the media object from a first server via a network connection when the media object is not stored in the appliance. Then the appliance may play the media object.

Abstract: A system including a Multi Function Printer/Product/Peripheral (MFP) and a portable computing device adapted to allow automatic copying of documents by the MFP from the portable computing device. The portable computing device includes a display, a plurality of sensors for detecting light, a light detection module and a page changing module. The sensors are positioned to detect light from the MFP and trigger a page change automatically. The MFP in accordance with the present invention includes a scanner with a platen, a page change detection module, an image processing module, a device identification module, and a document matching & retrieval module. The page change detection module is adapted to receive the images presented by the portable computing device on the platen of the scanner for copying. The page change detection module detects changes and causes the MFP to scan and output a copy.

In one embodiment, examining a first log stored on a first, portable device and a second log associated with a second device; and determining that the portable device interacted with the second device based on one or more entries in the first and second logs.

The method includes receiving a request regarding a first document, retrieving a second document from a cache, the second document having a pre-existing relationship with the first document, extracting data from the second document image data, applying image processing to the first document using the extracted data from the second document image data to create a third document and printing the third document.

Abstract: Techniques for displaying information related to collection hierarchies. In one embodiment, an integrated direct-manipulation image-based interface is provided for displaying information related to collections. The interface also enables operations to be performed on collections and their elements. Multiple levels of the collection hierarchy are made visible and editable at the same time by the user interface.

Abstract: An exchange system for intangible goods comprises a first user system, a second user system, a registry system, a clearinghouse system and a hash module coupled for communication with each other. The first and second user systems includes a content module for acting as a repository for intangible goods, a pricing module for setting the price of intangible goods, a transaction generator module for creating transactions between seller and buyer, and a transaction log module for recording any transaction in which the user system participates. These systems are used to consummate transactions with other users for exchanging intangible goods. As part of each transaction, the user and the transaction must be entered or registered in the registry system. The registry system comprises an account module and a transaction log module for maintaining the anonymity of the sellers and buyers.

Abstract: Techniques for managing media objects are provided. The techniques include providing an algorithm configured to generate an identifier (ID) based on content of a first media object. The ID is then generated for the first media object. The ID allows the first device to identify the first media object to a second device. The second device is configured to use the ID to determine if a second media object associated with the ID is accessible to the second device. Also, the determination is made notwithstanding source information for the first and second media objects or digital rights restrictions imposed on the first and second media objects, where the first media object and second media object include substantially identical content.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for scanning and/or printing barcodes is described. In one embodiment, the method includes scanning a barcode at a first location with a device, storing the scanned barcode in a memory in the device, and printing the barcode at a second location with the device, where the second location and first location are not the same.

Abstract: Techniques for archiving audio information communicated between members of a group using an audio communication system such as a point-to-multipoint audio communication system. The archived audio information can then be retrieved by members of the group or by any other user at any time subsequent to the live transmission of the audio information. Audio information communications between communication devices used by members of a group are monitored and recorded. The recorded audio information is then analyzed to identify one or more conversation portions in the audio information. Audio information corresponding to the conversation portions is then archived. The archived information is then available for retrieval.

Abstract: A query is received. The query may be an object containing temporal information. A query model including static and temporal components is then determined for the object. A weighting for static and temporal components is also determined. The query model is then compared with one or more search models. The search models also include static and temporal components. Search results are then determined based on the comparison. In one embodiment, the comparison may compare the static and temporal components of the query model and the search model. A weighting of the differences between the static and temporal components may be used to determine the ranking for the search results.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for collecting digital data. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving data input by scanning a sheet of paper using a scanner on a machine, identifying the sheet of paper as a form having one or more fields of user entered data to validate, validating the user entered data using a user interface on the machine, and sending the user entered data to a backend system.

Abstract: A system for editing audio objects in which a variety of audio objects are represented as images and laid out in a 2 dimensional visual environment. The system includes a display unit, a processing unit, a user interface unit, and a device for playing/receiving audio. The system has the capability to perform a variety of editing functions, such as the recording and playback of audio content, joining and splitting audio objects, and reordering audio objects. Additionally, the system includes functionality to automatically recording new content when sound is detected above a set threshold. Furthermore, the system includes functionality for linking portions of audio objects to media objects such as HTML documents and video.
