Patent number: 8003073Abstract: Processes are provided for the storage and release of hydrogen by means of dehydrogenation of hydrogen carrier compositions where at least part of the heat of dehydrogenation is provided by a hydrogen-reversible selective oxidation of the carrier. Autothermal generation of hydrogen is achieved wherein sufficient heat is provided to sustain the at least partial endothermic dehydrogenation of the carrier at reaction temperature. The at least partially dehydrogenated and at least partially selectively oxidized liquid carrier is regenerated in a catalytic hydrogenation process where apart from an incidental employment of process heat, gaseous hydrogen is the primary source of reversibly contained hydrogen and the necessary reaction energy.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2008Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.Inventors: Guido Peter Pez, Alan Charles Cooper, Aaron Raymond Scott

Publication number: 20080138674Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for fuelling a hydrogen-powered vehicle directly with a solid-state particulate carrier material those functions as a reversible hydrogen carrier. The material is delivered to the vehicle from a filling station via pneumatic transfer in a carrier fluid. Such as a hydrogen gas or an inert gas. Following removal of hydrogen from the carrier material to form an at least partially dehydrogenated carrier, a second re-fuelling mode of operation removed the hydrogen-depleted carrier from the vehicle's fuel storage vessel and pneumatically transfers it back to the filling station, where it can be subsequently rehydrogenated.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 8, 2006Publication date: June 12, 2008Inventors: Guido Peter Pez, Thomas Claude Noll

Patent number: 6596055Abstract: A process is provided for the transport and storage of hydrogen by reversible sorption and containment within carbon-metal hybrid materials. The process comprises contacting a carbon-metal hybrid composition with a hydrogen-containing gas at conditions of temperature and pressure whereby the carbon-metal hybrid composition sorbs the hydrogen gas.
