  • Patent number: 8181993
Abstract: An identification card of plastic, for example PVC or polyester, is introduced, in which tactile symbols in the form of foamed relief structures are clearly visually perceivable. The symbols are outlined by a contour achieved by discoloration of the plastic.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 11, 2007
Date of Patent: May 22, 2012
    Assignee: Giesecke & Devrient GmbH
    Inventors: Markus Erdmann, Günter Endres
  • Patent number: 8006908
Abstract: The invention relates to a data carrier into which, by a laser beam, identifiers (20, 22) are introduced in the form of patterns, letters, numbers and/or images that are visible due to local changes in the optical properties of the data carrier, effected by the laser beam and resulting from material transformations. According to the present invention, the data carrier comprises a laser-sensitive recording layer (26) that is transparent in the visible spectral range and that is provided with a surface relief in the form of a lens grid (28). The identifiers are introduced with the laser beam from different directions through the lens grid (28) into the recording layer (26) and are perceptible when later viewed from those same directions. The data carrier is transparent at least in the area of the introduced identifiers (20, 22).

  • Publication number: 20110174884
Abstract: The invention relates to a card (1), such as a credit card or ID card, which has several layers laminated with each other, wherein between a first card layer (21) and a second card layer (22) there is embedded a security element (2) which has a plastic or lacquer layer (4) with a relief structure (5). The relief structure has areas (5?, 5?) with different picture elements and produces a visible representation (6) and a hidden representation (7) which can be made visible with aids. The security element is adhesively bonded by adhesive layers (9, 10) to the two card layers (21, 22) between which it is embedded, the adhesives being chosen from the group which consists of physically drying adhesives and adhesives crosslinkable by heat, preferably water-based. Upon use of an adhesive crosslinkable by heat, the crosslinking temperature of the adhesive is lower than the softening temperature of the plastic or the lacquer layer (4) in which there is present the relief structure (5).

  • Publication number: 20100290039
Abstract: The invention relates to a data carrier into which, by means of a laser beam, identifiers are introduced that are visible in the form of irreversible changes, caused by the laser beam, in the optical properties of the data carrier. According to the present invention, the data carrier comprises a laser-sensitive layer (20) that is opaque in the visible spectral range, and that is combined with a securing layer (22) that is metallized at least in a sub-area, the identifiers (30, 32) being introduced by the laser beam simultaneously and in perfect register into the laser-sensitive layer (20) and the metallized sub-area (24) of the securing layer (22).

  • Patent number: 7637537
Abstract: A card, in particular credit card, identity card, bank card or the like is proposed that includes a plurality of laminated layers between which a security element with a relief structure, in particular holographic diffraction structures, is embedded. The materials are selected so that the softening temperature of the security element layer having the relief structure has a higher softening temperature than the card layers between which the security element is laminated. This permits the multilayer laminated card to be produced by conventional laminating methods without appreciably impairing the relief structure by the pressures and temperatures thereby occurring. Special combinations of materials and in particular suitable materials for the layer having the relief structure are proposed.

  • Publication number: 20070085337
Abstract: The invention relates to a multilayer security element having a metal layer (20) into which are introduced, by a laser beam, identifiers (16) in the form of patterns, letters, numbers and/or images, the metal layer (20) being disposed between two translucent coating layers (26, 28). The identifiers (16) in the metal layer (20) display a watermark effect in which they appear, when viewed in transmitted light, as a positive image, and when viewed in reflected light, as a negative image.
