  • Patent number: 5343375
Abstract: An emergency lighting strip provides for illumination of the floor of an emergency egress passageway during clear air conditions and also marks an escape path during conditions of limited visibility. The strip mounts two strings of narrow cone L.E.D.s in a transparent tubular housing which is mounted on the passageway wall. The marker string mounts L.E.D.s at half-inch intervals with their beam axes aimed at the middle of the passageway floor. The illuminator string mounts L.E.D.s at four-inch intervals with their beam axes angled above horizontal. A strip of the half-inch spaced L.E.D.s, with the L.E.D. beam axes perpendicular to the wall is mounted to frame and mark an exit doorway.

  • Patent number: 5291195
Abstract: A docking target (10) includes three concentric circles (C1, C2, C3) each comprising a plurality of different color light emitting diodes (D1, D2, D3) spaced about the circumference of each circle (C1, C2, C3). During vehicle approach, each circle appears initially as a light spot, then a continuous ring of light and finally a plurality of independent light points at defined distances of the vehicle (14) from the station (12) so that the operator can determine distance of the vehicle (14) to the target (10). The light emitting diodes (D1, D2, D3) on each circle, when visible, provide attitude information of the vehicle (14) with respect to the station (12) by the intensities of the light emitting diodes (D1, D2, D3) and the geometric shape produced thereby so that the operator can adjust the attitude of the vehicle (14) with respect to the station (12).

  • Patent number: 5153722
Abstract: A fire detection system includes a color video camera, a frame grabber and a computer processor operative to store and examine a series of image frames of the viewed area. Ultraviolet and infrared detectors produce event signals when energy received exceeds predetermined thresholds. The processor then rapidly evaluates the images from the camera to determine bright area objects, their location, edge profile, edge flicker, stationarity and spectral characteristics as well as spectral flicker to confirm a fire event. Finally, the size of a confirmed fire image is measured as a final criterion for the release of fire suppressant material, either in a limited zone within which the fire is located or within the entire facility.

  • Patent number: 5130909
Abstract: An emergency aid, in the form of a lighting strip arranged along the floor of a predetermined escape route, is provided for guiding the escape of occupants from a confined area during conditions of severely reduced visibility. The strip comprises a plurality of spaced light-emitting elements, each being an L.E.D. emitting a beam having an axial intensity of at least 0.12 candela and a full cone angle no greater than 24 degrees. Each element includes an exernal reflector, in the form of a spaced prism or a metal reflector mounted on the element, located along its beam axis and angled with respect thereto for deflecting the emitted light at a predetermined angle. In one embodiment the elements are arranged in pairs facing each other with their beam axes parallel to the axis of the strip and their reflectors between them.
