    Abstract: The present invention is primarily directed to a surgical retractor suitable for laparoscopic insertion, comprising an elongate shaft having two or more arms at its distal end, and a mechanism for controlling the mutual separation of said arms located at its proximal end, wherein a membrane is attached to said two or more arms, such that upon mutual separation of said arms, said membrane forms a non-planar surface suitable for use as a barrier for retracting or holding tissues or organs.
