Abstract: Novel herbicides of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 represents an organic radical,R.sup.2 represents hydrogen or an organic radical,R.sup.3 represents an organic radical or an amino radical,R.sup.4 represents hydrogen, an organic radical, an ether radical or an amino radical,X represents N or CH,Y and Z each represent N, CH or a substituted C radical, andM is H, a metal ion or an acyl radical, or a strong acid adduct thereof. Some intermediates are also new.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a 2-cyanamino-4,6-dialkoxy-1,3,5-triazine of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents alkoxy, comprising reacting 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine with cyanamide under alkaline conditions thereby to produce a 2-cyanamino-4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazine of the formula ##STR2## in which R.sup.1 represents an alkali metal ion, reacting the 2-cyanamino-4,6-dichloro-1,3,5-triazine with at least twice the molar amount of an alcoholate of the formulaRMein whichMe is an alkali metal ion, in the presence of a diluent, and then reacting with acid in the presence of water. The end product is a known intermediate for synthesizing herbicides.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a guanidine derivative of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 represents hydrogen or the radical R.sup.5 --S(O).sub.m --,m represents the numbers zero, 1 or 2 andR.sup.5 represents an optionally substituted radical from the series comprising alkyl, aralkyl, aryl and heteroaryl,R.sup.2 represents a six-membered aromatic heterocyclic structure which contains at least one nitrogen atom and is substituted, andR.sup.8 represents an optionally substituted radical from the series comprising C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, cycloalkyl, phenylalkyl and aryl,which comprises reacting a guanidine derivative of the formula ##STR2## with one or two molar equivalent(s), respectively, of a halogen/sulphur compound of the formulaR.sup.5 --S(O).sub.m --X.sup.1in whichX.sup.1 represents fluorine, chlorine or bromine.The compounds are herbicidally active.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of an aryl cyanamide comprising reacting an arylamine of the formula ##STR1## in which Ar is aryl,R is hydrogen or alkyl, andn is 1, 2 or 3,(excepting 2-nitroaniline, 4-nitroaniline and arylamines having a nucleophilic character equal to or lower than 2-nitroaniline and 4-nitroaniline), with cyanogen chloride in 1-2 times the molar amount per mole of amino group of the arylamine initially in a homogeneous liquid phase using as reaction medium acetic acid (which is optionally diluted with water and/or a water-miscible, organic auxiliary solvent) in the presence of 1-1.5 molar equivalents of an auxiliary base for each amino group of the arylamine, there being more cyanogen chloride than equivalents of auxiliary base present in the reaction mixture at any point in time of the reaction, the pH of the reaction mixture being maintained below 7.

Abstract: The new compound ##STR1## is prepared and converted to the new acetal ##STR2## which is reacted with an alkali phenolate or alkaline earth metal phenolate in the presence of copper or a copper compound as a catalyst and in the presence of a diluent at a temperature between about 100.degree. and 200.degree. C. to produce the new acetal ##STR3## which can be hydrolyzed to the corresponding aldehyde which is a known intermediate for pyrethroid-like insecticides.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a 2-cyanamino-4,6-dialkoxy-1,3,5-triazine of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each alkoxy, which comprises reacting ##STR2## with Na.sub.2 N--CN to produce ##STR3## acidifying that to produce ##STR4## and reacting that with at least twice the molar amount of R.sup.2 Na in the presence of a diluent, then adding water and acidifying the mixture.The intermediates are new and the known end products can be used to synthesize herbicides.
