    Abstract: A smoothing device for an applicator unit for applying a coating on a moving web of fabric, or the like. A hollow supporting beam supports a doctor element via a holding device carried on the beam. A supporting body extends through the beam. An outer pipe surrounds the supporting body and is radially spaced therefrom. Hydraulic pressure elements between the outer pipe and the supporting body transmit forces to the supporting body. At circumferentially spaced locations around the outer pipe, the outer pipe engages the interior of the beam, defining liquid transmission channels located circumferentially between the connections to the support beam around the outer pipe. The channels permit liquid to be transmitted axially of the support beam for transferring heat along and eliminating localized heat stress on the beam. Various cross-sectional shapes of the outer pipe and of the beam are disclosed.

    Abstract: A hollow roll featuring a layer of permanent magnets along axial sections of the roll is provided. Pole carriers having permanent magnets are arranged opposite the layer of permanent magnets on the roll. The pole carriers are supported on a core carrier, preferably by means of hydraulic or pneumatic thrust elements, or servomotors. The polarity is arranged such that like poles of the magnets oppose one another. The pole carriers are arranged in an axial row, and are movable in guideways while supported by servoelements. The servoelements are preferably activated hydraulically or pneumatically.

    Abstract: Apparatus for stabilizing the trailing end of a web that is to be spliced to the leading end of a new web includes a knife for severing the old web and for creating a tail that must be stabilized, a suction box over which the trailing end passes, which provides stability to the trailing end, a pressure roll movable to move the cut trailing end of the old web against the leading end of the new web and a leaf-spring-like extension extending downstream of the suction box to the connection point or splice point between the webs. The extension is deflectable with the pressure roll and the extension carries the vacuum of the suction box further downstream and also supports the trailing end of the cut old web. The extension is cantilevered to the downstream side of the suction box.

    Abstract: A drive for the guide roll of a drying felt or wire in the drying group of a paper machine, or the like. A gear transmission drives a selected one of the paper web guide rolls, which may be a drying cylinder, in a first group of rolls. The felt or wire is wrapped around a second group of rolls comprising felt or wire guide rolls. The one felt or wire guide roll located nearest the gear transmission is connected to the shaft of a drive gear of the gear transmission via a belt drive connection. Thus, rotation of the drive gear of the gear transmission via the gear transmission drives the one selected driven roll of the first group, and via the belt drive connection drives the driven felt or wire guide roll.

A plurality of hydraulically or pneumatically actuated pressing elements are disposed between the tube and inside of the beam and extend over the length of the beam and are pressurized to support the beam.

A baffle connected to the front wall provides a run-out gap therebetween and cooperates with the backing roll to provide a hydrodynamic pressure gap at the material web run-in side, such that coating mixture from run-out gap is entrained by the speed of the material web for reintroduction to application space through hydrodynamic pressure gap.

    Abstract: A coating apparatus, for applying a coating substance to a paper web, has a chamber from which the coating substance is supplied via a slit type mouth communicating with an applicator space which is defined by the paper web and a doctor blade element. At the web, on the side of the applicator space from where the paper web enters, a throttling passage is formed by a back-pressure element in such a manner that a stream of excess coating substance issues from the applicator space via the throttling passage and abruptly separates from the web and in so doing flows away from the web predominantly as a film thereby preventing completely or almost completely the admission of air into the applicator space by the air boundary layer adjacent the moving web.

    Abstract: Apparatus for applying a liquid coating onto a moving web has one or preferably two rotatable rollers. In the two roller embodiment both rollers lie on the same plane which is at or near the horizontal. The two roller embodiment positions the rollers adjacent each so as to form a press nip between them. The moving web makes contact with one of the rollers, or the single roller along an extended circumferential arc of the roller. Adjacent each roller is a supply apparatus for depositing a liquid on to a portion of the roller jacket not in contact with the web. Wiper rods are associated with each supply apparatus and are biased against the jacket of the roller to make the coating of liquid uniform. Surplus liquid is used to wash the rollers to remove web fibers and glue and pigment particulate to avoid contamination thereby of the supply apparatus and wiper rods. The surplus liquid and fibers and particulate are collected in sumps.

    Abstract: A coating device where the pressurized coating space formed between the doctor element and the material web and/or the counter roll carrying it is defined by a regulating plate on the inlet side relative to the material web. A guide device is so arranged in the coating space that coating mixture will circulate around it on all sides in one direction of rotation. The guide device generally leaves only relatively narrow flow channels open in the coating chamber so that harmful turbulent flows are extensively avoided which through pulsating air inclusions might lead to defects in the applied coating.

    Abstract: A doctor blade mounting is provided for use in association with a running web of sheet material, such as, for example, paper. The doctor blade mounting includes a doctor blade column retained in a blade bed which is formed of an elastomeric material. A leaf spring is provided for providing tension between the doctor blade column and the running web and is secured to the blade bed by a guide shaft adapted to receive an end of the leaf spring. The leaf spring is secured in the guide shaft by retaining means, i.e., catches, cams or flanges. Due to the creation of a flexible portion within the blade bed, the leaf spring can be unlocked after removal of the doctor blade column.
