    Abstract: A method for correcting for exposure in a digital image which was captured by an image capture device and which is to be printed on a printer which forms monochrome or color images, on a medium, including providing a plurality of exposure and tone scale correcting transforms, each such transform being unique to an exposure condition and which corrects exposure and tone scale for a digital image captured by the capture device for such unique exposure conditions and to be printed by the printer, applying the plurality of transforms to the digital image and printing a plurality of images corresponding to the digital image on which the transforms were applied, and determining the most satisfying printed image to the user which corresponds a particular transform to be used to make visual images from the digital image.

    Abstract: A method which substantially maintains the exposure latitude contained in one or more digital images captured in linear form and which uses an output device with a predetermined aim curve for producing visual images from such digital image includes the steps of selecting a particular reference portion of the scene corresponding to the digital image and adjusting the code value of such reference portion to a code value corresponding to a desired density and which corresponds to a point on the aim curve and changing the remaining code values of the digital image based upon the selected code value of the point on the aim curve so that a new digital image in linear form is produced; transforming the new digital image to form a third digital image which has code values based on the aim curve; and producing visual images by the output device in response to the transformed third digital image.

    Abstract: A system and method of image reproduction in color with preferential tone mapping are provided in which the method includes the steps of capturing original scene parameters and creating a visual reproduction of the scene, the method additionally comprising:performing a transformation of said captured scene parameters, said transformation being such that, taken in conjunction with untransformed characteristics of the capturing and creating steps, it results in a reproduced tone mapping having instantaneous gamma values of viewed reproduction density relative to density of the original scene which are greater than a minimum value of A and less than A plus 0.35 times scene exposure density over a scene exposure density range of from 0.60 to 1.45 as measured relative to a zero density, 100% diffuse reflector in the original scene, the instantaneous gamma values within scene exposure density range further lying entirely within a range of values subtended by an angle of 14.degree.
