  • Publication number: 20050079869
Abstract: To authenticate a mobile node, a Mobile IPv6 registration request is received from the mobile node, where the registration request contains authentication information. One example of the Mobile IPv6 registration request is a Mobile IPv6 Binding Update message. A procedure to authenticate the mobile node is performed based on the authentication information contained in the registration request.

  • Patent number: 6819652
Abstract: A method and apparatus in a communications system for processing control messages for a session in a packet-based network within the communications system. A first indicator is set in a control message for handling a session within the communications system through the packet-based network. The control message is sent to a destination within the packet-based network. The control message is provided priority processing within the packet-based network based on the presence of the first indicator. A second indicator is set in a header of a packet used to transport the control message, such that nodes within the packet based network, which do not examine the control message, provide priority processing of the packet in sending the packet through the packet-based network to the destination.

  • Patent number: 6769000
Abstract: A communications architecture for enabling IP-based mobile communications includes a Local Service Function (LSF) component configured to serve as an IP-based serving area network for a set of x-Access Networks, and a Network Service Function (NSF) component configured to serve as an IP-based home network by managing a MN's subscription and associated profile so that the MN is authorized to use the resources of the LSF. An x-Access Network (xAN) is interconnected to the LSF and NSF for providing heterogeneous Layer 2 access for MNs irrespective of access technology.

  • Patent number: 6751672
Abstract: An efficient and improved dynamic home agent discovery algorithm and system to be used in a protocol for network communications. The present invention encapsulates and integrates communications of the home agents into a single home agent communication. Communication between a mobile node and the home agents is simplified to a single home agent communication. Dynamic home agent discovery processes are performed, based on the single home agent communication. Encapsulation is achieved by having each of the home agents maintain a home agent list that contains information about each of the home agents coupled to the home link. A designated home agent receives and processes home agent discovery requests from the mobile node on behalf of home agents coupled to the home link, and a designated home agent sends home agent advertisements to and communicates with the mobile node.

  • Patent number: 6711147
Abstract: A network, system and method for merging a packet service such as GPRS with a mobile IP is disclosed. The GPRS network includes a first base station for providing wireless access to a mobile node, a GPRS support node (GSN) connected to the base station, and a security gateway for connecting the GPRS network to a second network that may use mobile IP. The GSN is capable of creating an IP tunnel connecting it to the second network through the security gateway. The GSN is also capable of handling mobile IP specific messaging and converting the wireless access to mobile IP specific messaging.

  • Patent number: 6578085
Abstract: A system and method for route optimization in a wireless Internet Protocol (IP) network. The system and method send, to a home agent, a data packet; transmit, to a mobile node, the data packet using a first address; maintain a list of correspondent nodes associated with the mobile node; send, to the correspondent node, a binding update message; and transmit, directly to the mobile node, subsequent data packets using the first address. The system and method additionally: transmit, to a home agent, a registration request comprising a new address; transmit, to a mobile node, a registration reply in response to the registration request; compare the new address to an old address; if the new address and the old address are not equal, transmit, to the correspondent node, a binding update message; transmit, to the home agent, a binding acknowledgment in response to the binding update message; and transmit, to the mobile node, all subsequent messages via the new address.

  • Patent number: 6574214
Abstract: In a mobile communication system having mobile foreign agents, the present invention eliminates the use of multiple source/destination headers attached to an information packet during the tunneling operation by using either a decapsulation/encapsulation or a forwarding operation with the encapsulated information packet. Either of these operations reduces the overhead incurred in the multiple encapsulation headers by reducing encapsulation of the information packet to a single level. Upon receipt of the information packet at the foreign agent on the communications system, the information packet is directed to the mobile node using a routing chain table maintained by the foreign agent or a next hop routing table maintained by the foreign agent and each mobile foreign agent in the transmission path. Once implemented, these data structures can also assist with routing of information packets within the foreign subnetwork.

  • Publication number: 20030060199
Abstract: A method and apparatus for allowing a plurality of mobile nodes to access a network with one or more Network Access Identifiers (NAIs), This allows a user to access a network with multiple mobile nodes using a single NAI. The method and apparatus is achieved by the addition of a Session/Device Extension, a Host Identification Extension, a Host Identification NAI Extension, and/or a Lease Time Extension.

  • Publication number: 20030002468
Abstract: The present invention supports a virtual private network identifier for an information packet transmission on an IP mobility system. By identifying a virtual private network in this manner, the Foreign Agent will be able to properly route data packets even if two or more Mobile Nodes are associated with virtual private networks on the same home network.

  • Patent number: 6430698
Abstract: A computer protocol that manages and provides efficient communications and utilization of resources between a mobile computer system or device and other systems and devices. Each home agent maintains a home agent list containing information about each of the home agents coupled to the home link. A designated home agent on behalf of the home agents for a virtual home agent is used to send and broadcast home agent advertisement, to receive and process a request from a mobile node, to process and send a reply to the mobile node. Synchronization mechanisms or tools, such as home agent priority or floating token method, are provided for proper operation of a Virtual Distribution Home Agent Protocol (VDHAP). These mechanisms or tools are used to fairly distribute loads from the mobile node among the home agents within the virtual home agent.

  • Patent number: 6219547
Abstract: Routing of data in a mobile radiotelephone system to an intended recipient roaming mobile end station (M-ES) is facilitated by determining if the M-ES is within the same geographic area of the originating data source. If the M-ES is within the same geographic area as verified by interrogation of the local mobile data interface station, then data is sent directly to the intended M-ES without transmission to the mobile end station's home mobile data interface station. If the intended recipient M-ES is not currently located within the same geographic area served by the originating data source, then the data is transmitted to the M-ES's home mobile data intermediate station where the last known location of the roaming M-ES is stored and then on to the appropriate mobile data intermediate station for transmission to the intended M-ES.

  • Patent number: 6172973
Abstract: The instant invention allows control of voice transmission from end user to end user by common channel signaling without the repeated conversion delays encountered by entering and exiting the standard voice network and an ATM network. The control is accomplished in parallel over the standard public switch telephone network while the voice “data” is transported over an ATM “data” network. Each ATM node has with it a co-located PSTN voice switch. A pair of control links are used to communicate between the two co-located ATM and TDM switches.
