Patent number: 6947434Abstract: A message is distributed from a source to one or more hosts in a communications network that comprises one or more multicast capable routers. To do this, a first multicast capable router generates a first table that identifies sub-branches connected to the first multicast capable router, and for each identified sub-branch, includes membership-related information from which it can be determined how many hosts are part of the sub-branch and (optionally) a metric associated with each of the sub-branch hosts. The multicast capable router then receives the message to be distributed and a first value, N1, that specifies how many hosts the message is to be distributed to, and uses the first table to identify N1 hosts and their respective sub-branches. It distributes the message to each of the identified sub-branches along with a second value that specifies how many hosts within the sub-branch the message is to be distributed to.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2001Date of Patent: September 20, 2005Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Frank Hundscheidt, Heino Hameleers

Patent number: 6925304Abstract: A payload data connection arrangement within a core network in a cellular mobile communication network reduces the number of transcodings and reduces the number of transmission devices that are linked in by a more flexible handling of interworking functions. This is achieved by comparing possible payload connections between a core network and access networks for both legs of a call. Based on the result of the comparison, only those devices are linked in that are technically necessary. Methods and devices that are used to set-up data connections with said benefits are illustrated and described.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2001Date of Patent: August 2, 2005Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Heino Hameleers, Frank Hundscheidt, Hermann Dingels, Jarle Fjōrtoft

Publication number: 20050044141Abstract: Conventional anycast networks provide a service which allows a sender to access the nearest of a group of receivers sharing a common anycast address. In contrast thereto, multicast networks establish data communications between a sender and all receivers confined by a group having the same multicast address. Thus, the networks providing both anycast and multicast routing only allow for accesses by a sender to one receiver being specified according to the employed anycast protocol or to a plurality of receivers forming a multicast group. In order to provide accesses by a sender to a specified number of nearest receivers, the present invention provides a method and a system for multiple hosts anycast routing in a network. An indicator specifying the number of nearest receivers to be set up for data communications with a sender is included in an anycast address or associated thereto as an extension.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 18, 2002Publication date: February 24, 2005Inventors: Heino Hameleers, Frank Hundscheidt

Publication number: 20040255016Abstract: The invention addresses the field of mobile communications. It relates to a method, network node and computer program for management of cached information within a hierarchical structure. The basic approach is to provide an intelligent mechanism for more dynamic management of the cached contents. In particular it provides a solution for a more efficient utilisation of the storage resources in a caching architecture by caching a single cached copy of the same content on each path from a client to the original source in the hierarchical architecture. This basically means that the cached information is placed as high up the hierarchy as necessary, but that the mechanism is enhanced with the capability to also move the cached information down the hierarchy in case the content is mainly used on a regular base by hosts connected to a part of the hierarchical architecture. The dynamics of the proposed solution foresees also to replicate a cached content to more then one part of the hierarchical architecture.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 25, 2004Publication date: December 16, 2004Inventors: Frank Hundscheidt, Heino Hameleers

Patent number: 6792348Abstract: A traffic management system comprises a road network on a physical layer and at least a packet switched control network on a traffic control layer. The vehicle traffic formed on the physical layer by a plurality of vehicles traveling along a plurality of road sections of the road network is mapped into a packet traffic constituted by a plurality of packers routed along a plurality of packet routing links. Packet control units of the packet switched control network are adapted to control the packets on a respective packet routing link in the traffic control layer to correspond to or simulate a respective vehicle on a corresponding road section on the physical layer. The traffic management system thus treats each vehicle as a packet and can monitor, control, or simulate the traffic on this physical layer by the packet traffic in the traffic control layer.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2001Date of Patent: September 14, 2004Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Heino Hameleers, Frank Hundscheidt

Publication number: 20040052256Abstract: The invention introduces a method for transmitting data packets of a call in a communication network, an edge node, a communication network and a computer program for performing said method. In the invented method, packets are sent between two edge nodes, wherein a first edge node removes redundant headers and replaces them by a new header, defined for the transmission of data packets between the edge nodes. Information that is necessary for the rebuilding of the removed headers is sent on a different path to the edge nodes, once, and stored in said edge nodes.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 25, 2003Publication date: March 18, 2004Inventors: Heino Hameleers, Frank Hundscheidt, Ioannis Masmanidis, Arndt Ritterbecks, Andreas Witzel

Patent number: 6694247Abstract: The invention relates to a traffic management system (TMSYS) including a layered structure of management layers. The system comprises a physical layer (PL) on which the actual traffic takes place. A traffic signalling layer (TSL) controls the traffic on the physical layer (PL) and collects traffic information (TSI) about the vehicle traffic. A traffic control layer (TCL) comprises a packet switched control network (PSCN) for routing packets to correspond or simulate the vehicle traffic. A service application layer (SAL) provides special services to the traffic control layer (TCL) and/or the traffic signalling layer (TSL). A communication layer (CL) is used for communicating the information. Each layer comprises an exchange interface for receiving/transmitting information to one or more of the other layers. The layered structure of the traffic management system allows in particular a flexible adaptation, exchange or extension of functionalities provided in each layer.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 2001Date of Patent: February 17, 2004Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Heino Hameleers, Frank Hundscheidt

Patent number: 6577862Abstract: Provided is a system, method, and computer program for transmitting, across a mobile communication network, the occurrence of silence in a communication channel. The system generally comprises a first Media Gateway (MGW), which could be a transmission control node (first TCN), for executing a silence transmission algorithm, and a second MGW, such as a second transmission control node (second TCN), for executing a comfort noise generating algorithm. One method detects silence in a communications channel and then transmits a network silence indicator (SID). Another method receives the network SID and then produces a comfort noise. The computer program utilizes a query module for detecting a comfort noise production module in a destination MGW, and a network SID transmission module to send a network SID across a PLMN.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1999Date of Patent: June 10, 2003Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Lee Davidson, Eric Valentine, Heino Hameleers, Frank Hundscheidt

Patent number: 6487209Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for reliably transferring Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) signals originating at a MS through an IP based GSM network. In general, when a MS sends a DTMF request, it is processed in the IP network by a logical application module in a MSC, which, based on the disclosed processing, activates another logical application module in an appropriate gateway (for independent, remote, tone generation), and then the logical application module in the gateway directs the production of the DTMF signal towards the interworking or destination network.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1999Date of Patent: November 26, 2002Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Eric Valentine, Lee Davidson, Heino Hameleers
