    Abstract: This invention concerns a device used in the process of manufacturing an automobile pane 1 equipped with a polymer frame 52 placed on the edge of the pane 1. The frame 52 is extruded onto the pane 1 which can be moved by means of a suitable support in such a way that the edge of the pane travels through a recess in an extrusion head 25 and 40. The recess of the extrusion head 40 preferably includes a U-shaped jaw 41 straddling the edge of the pane. At the front extremity of the two half-jaws of the U-shaped jaw 41 there are disposed sealing ledges or shoes 42 and 43 which are movable perpendicularly to the surfaces of the pane and which, during extrusion, bear upon the surfaces of the pane. Alternatively, the extrusion head can include a fixed jaw where the sealing ledges or shoes slideably and sealingly contact the plate.

    Abstract: A process for the production of a plate with a polymer frame shaped onto the edge of the plate. The frame is extruded onto the plate while the latter is held stationary in a working station of a handling automaton or robot with a support device which corresponds to the shape of the plate in such a way that the edge of the plate projects freely over the support face of the support device. With the aid of the robot, an extrusion die having a through, mouth-like slot with two jaws engages the top and bottom surfaces of the circumferential edge of the plate as the mouth-like slot engages the plate edge. At the front end of the two jaws of the die mouth, there are sealing ledges movable at right angles to the plate surfaces, which are supported on the latter during the extrusion process.

    Abstract: A method of shaping an extruded section of polymer directly onto the surface edges of a glazing or glass plate. In one embodiment, a rotatable plate member having a plurality of calibrated die cross sections is placed in front of the exit orifice of an extrusion die. The plate member is rotated to obtain, an extruded section having different profile cross sections and the flow rate of the polymer through the die is controlled in response to the position of the plate member so that the amount of polymer being fed corresponds to the respective profile section being extruded. In another embodiment, an obturating slide member is placed in front of an extrusion die exit orifice sized to correspond to the largest desired profile cross section. To produce abrupt changes in profile cross section, the slide is moved quickly at predetermined locations along the path of the extrusion die. To produce a continuous transition between profile sections, the slide is moved slowly during extrusion.

    Abstract: A process for making sheets of plastic material of high optical quality by casting the plastic material or a mixture of its components on a flat, moving substrate is disclosed. According to the invention, a stable pocket of material is formed on the moving substrate upstream of the zone at which the plastic material flows from the casting apparatus onto the substrate. The material in the pocket moves in predetermined paths and leaves the pocket to form the lower portion and the edges of the sheet. A direct stream of material is simultaneously formed downstream of the zone of delivery of the plastic material onto the substrate in a tangential relation to the meniscus, to form the upper portion of the sheet.
