    Abstract: A supplemental spine fixation device and method is used in association with a primary spine fixation device. The supplemental spine fixation device includes a guide and spacer for distracting apart adjacent spinous processes and the device has hook members which hook about the first and second spinous processes. With the spinous processes distracted and the hook members about the spinous processes, the hook members can be rigidly secured to a hub in order to rigidly affix the spinous processes about the spacer. The rigidity between the spinous processes assures that the vertebral bodies will be held rigidly in place in order to promote bone growth and fusion. Further additional freedom of movement between the spacer and hub is accomplished with the spacer being pivotably mounted relative to the hub. The hooks have a tissue distracting lead-in guide for allowing the hooks to be easily urged between spinous processes.

    Abstract: A method of promoting fusion of adjacent vertebral bodies include providing a conically-shaped cage body having bone engaging projections on an outer surface thereof, the cage body including a leading end having a first diameter and a trailing end having a second diameter that is larger than the first diameter. The method also includes positioning the leading end of the cage body adjacent an intervertebral disc space between an upper vertebral body and a lower vertebral body, whereby the upper and lower vertebral bodies have opposing end faces that define upper and lower limits of the intervertebral disc space. While urging the leading end of the cage body into the intervertebral disc space, the cage body is turned so that the bone engaging projections bite into the opposing end faces of the upper and lower vertebral bodies for anchoring the cage body to the upper and lower vertebral bodies.

    Abstract: A system and method for immobilizing adjacent spinous processes in accordance with the present invention can supplement primary fusion devices and methods by immobilizing spinous processes while bone from adjacent vertebral bodies grows together. The system requires less extensive surgical procedures than other common supplemental devices, and preferably does not require bone or ligament removal. One such system comprises three spacers positioned between spinous processes and adjustably connected with a plate positioned on either side of the spinous processes. Each plate includes grips, with each grip positioned adjacent to the spinous process, forming a clamp with a grip connected with the opposing plate.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method of inserting a two piece implant into a patient. A first insertion device is connected to a first piece of the implant, and a second insertion device is connected to a second piece of the implant. Each piece of the implant is inserted with its associated insertion device. The inserted pieces are aligned relative to each other by mutual engagement of alignment structures of the insertion devices. The aligned pieces are connected to each other and the insertion devices are disengaged from the implant pieces.
