  • Patent number: 4400945
Abstract: A reciprocating internal combustion engine with supercharging by several exhaust gas turbochargers. One or more housings are arranged on the internal combustion engine with the exhaust gas turbochargers being adapted to be mounted in the walls of such housing or housings in such a way that the turbines of the exhaust gas turbochargers and exhaust gas conduits are located in an interior of the housing or housings; whereas, the compressors of the exhaust gas turbochargers, as well as the supercharger air conduits with the supercharger air coolers are located exteriorly of the housing or housings.

  • Patent number: 4299090
Abstract: A cylinder-piston internal combustion engine which includes at least two single or two two-stage exhaust gas turbochargers which together and in parallel supply the cylinder of the internal combustion engine with charging air when there is a large supply of exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine. When there is a small amount of exhaust gases available, at least one of the exhaust gas turbochargers is adapted to be switched off so as to increase the charging pressure. A check valve is disposed in a suction line of a compressor of the exhaust gas turbocharger which is adapted to be switched off with the check valve allowing a flow of air in a suction line of the compressor in a direction of the compressor but prevents a flow of air in an opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 4248198
Abstract: A multi-cylinder supercharged diesel engine with low compression ratio, in which for starting and possibly at partial load operation a number of the cylinders are operated as a compressor and the compressed air produced by the same is fed to the remaining cylinders operating as an engine in addition to the combustion air sucked-in by the latter to achieve sufficient ignition conditions. One or several intermediate storage devices for the compressed air are provided which are connected with the cylinders operating as the compessor by way of valves adapted to be closed and with the cylinders operating as the engine by way of valves controlled in dependence on the piston position during the suction stroke and/or compression stroke of the corresponding cylinder operating as the engine.

  • Patent number: 4207848
Abstract: A heat-exchanger system for the charging-air of a low-compression reciprocating piston internal combustion engine operating with exhaust gas turbo-supercharging, which is equipped with a first charging-air-water heat-exchanger that during the starting and partial load operation supplies the heat energy of a heater device to the charging air and which can be connected to the cooling water circulation of the internal combustion engine, and with a second charging-air-water heat-exchanger which is connected to the cooling water circulation external to the engine; the two charging-air-water heat-exchangers are thereby adapted to be traversed in parallel by the charging-air while a control system enables a stepless control of the charging air flow through the individual heat-exchangers as a function of the temperature of the charging air upstream of the cylinders and of the operating condition of the internal combustion engine.

  • Patent number: 4191152
Abstract: A diesel internal combustion engine with several cylinder units each consisting of a piston and a cylinder, with a low compression ratio and with exhaust gas turbocharging, in which for purposes of starting, a number of the cylinder units operate as internal combustion engine and a number as compressor during the compression stroke; one compressor cylinder unit each is thereby coordinated to a corresponding engine cylinder unit, whereby the piston of compressor unit leads the piston of the engine cylinder unit to such an extent that the engine cylinder unit at the beginning of its compression stroke can be supercharged by the compressor cylinder unit; the cylinders of the two cylinder units are connected with each other by way of a line separate from the customary suction and exhaust gas lines, by way of a first valve controlled corresponding to the operating condition of the internal combustion engine and by way of a second valve which opens in the presence of the necessary supercharging pressure.

  • Patent number: 4120155
Abstract: A propulsion arrangement which includes two diesel engines with one of the two engines having a first compression ratio for ensuring a reliable starting and the second engine having a compression ratio that permits high supercharging and high average pressure. Each of the engines include an exhaust supercharger with surplus exhaust from the exhaust driven supercharger of the first engine being supplied to the second engine to prepare an air charge of the second engine for reliable ignition conditions in a partial load operation of the second engine. A device may be provided for heating up the air charge of the second engine at least in one of an idling and partial load operation with a temperature regulator controlling the temperature of the air charge of the second engine so as to set the temperature for the air charge such that at each rpm a final compression temperature exists in the cylinders of the second engine which is necessary for ignition in that engine.

  • Patent number: 4106444
Abstract: A liquid-cooled individual cylinder head for piston internal combustion engines with two inlet valves and two outlet valves arranged respectively adjacent one another, which consists of a cast upper part and of a double-walled bottom between the upper part and the combustion space, which is provided with apertures for the valves and for an injection nozzle or a pre-chamber; the bottom extends over the entire surface of the cylinder head upper part up to the outer boundary thereof while the lower surface of the upper part and both surfaces of the bottom are constructed planar; the two parts of the bottom are supported with respect to one another by wall portions or ribs within an annular zone in the area of the support of the bottom on the cylinder head seal while several cooling medium inlet openings are distributed in the lower wall of the double-walled bottom between the annular zone and an outer boundary.
