Patent number: 10320507Abstract: A method determines a propagation time of a message in a communication network. The message is transmitted from a first network component to a second network component along a communication connection, and the first network component detects a transmission time of the message and stores the corresponding transmission time information. The propagation time is determined using the transmission time information. The aim is to improve the accuracy when determining the propagation time. This is achieved in that the second network component returns the message to the first network component immediately after the message is encountered in the second network component. The first network component detects a reception time upon receiving the returned message and stores corresponding reception time information of the message. The propagation time of the message along the communication connection is determined using the transmission time information of the message and the reception time information of the message.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2014Date of Patent: June 11, 2019Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventor: Holger Heine

Patent number: 10182015Abstract: A method for redundant transmission of data telegrams between automation devices of an installation by a communication network requires a ring topology. A sending device sends out two data telegrams in different transmission directions of the communication network and a receiving device processes the data telegram arriving at the receiving device first and discards the other data telegram as a duplicate. To ensure fast transmission of data telegrams having important content, the sending automation device assigns a priority level and data telegrams having a high priority level are sent according to a first communication protocol and data telegrams having a low priority level are sent according to a different second communication protocol. A network component arranged between the sending device and the receiving device receives the data telegram, recognizes the priority level based on the communication protocol used, and forwards the data telegram taking into consideration the priority level.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2014Date of Patent: January 15, 2019Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventor: Holger Heine

Patent number: 9871747Abstract: A communications network includes a plurality of network components that are interconnected for exchanging data messages (data telegrams). The network has a first and a second partial network and each network component is connected to the two partial networks. In order to design such a communications network with few devices and so as to be as reliable as possible, the communications network has at least some network components that are interconnected along a chain. Each chain of network components has a first network component directly connected to the first partial network, and a second network component directly connected to the second partial network. A corresponding network component for operation in a communications network is also described, and a method for the interference-immune transmission of data messages in a communications network.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 2012Date of Patent: January 16, 2018Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventor: Holger Heine

Patent number: 9832254Abstract: A receiver network component operates in a communication network of an automation system. The component receives data messages sent redundantly by transmitter network components of the communication network and rejects duplicates of an already received data message. Interoperability of network components from different manufacturers is ensured even for device-redundant transmitter network components and redundant transmission of data messages is achieve with comparatively low complexity. The receiver network component is prompted by reception of a current data message from one of the transmitter network devices to check whether a data message with identical useful data has already been received from another transmitter network component. The data message is processed if it is received for the first time and it is rejected as a duplicate if it is a data message with such useful data that have already been received in an earlier data message from another transmitter network component.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 2015Date of Patent: November 28, 2017Assignee: Siemens AktiengesellschaftInventors: Holger Heine, Clemens Hoga

Publication number: 20170214479Abstract: A method for transmitting time synchronization messages in a communication network between a master clock and a slave clock to be synchronized with the time of the master clock. A network component of the communication network receives the time synchronization messages on one port and sends the time synchronization messages on another port. The network component determines a dwell time of a respective time synchronization message between the receipt and the sending with an internal clock and transmits dwell-time information to the slave clock. The slave clock synchronizes to the master clock using the received time synchronization messages and the associated dwell-time information. In order to perform accurate determination of the dwell-time information in a network component with an internal clock having comparatively low accuracy, the network component suspends all other messages within a time period in which the network component expects to receive a time synchronization message.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2014Publication date: July 27, 2017Inventor: HOLGER HEINE

Publication number: 20130100805Abstract: Data telegrams are transmitted from a transmitter to a receiver. A priority level is associated with the data telegrams that specifies a priority to be considered for the transfer of the particular data telegram. In order to transfer data telegrams having different priority levels with relatively less effort and thus even more quickly, an intermediate storage area is associated with each priority level in the transmitter, the data telegrams are transferred over the physical communication medium by different logical data connections, whose number corresponds with the number of priority levels. Lower priority data telegrams in the intermediate storage area are transferred by way of the logical data connection associated with the priority level until at least one higher priority data telegram is present in the intermediate storage area. The higher priority data telegram in the intermediate storage area is transmitted through a logical data connection with the higher priority level.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 25, 2010Publication date: April 25, 2013Applicant: SIEMENS AKTIENGESELLSCHAFTInventors: Holger Heine, Stephan Jorra, Harald Kapp
