  • Patent number: 9100976
Abstract: A system and method for distributed scheduling of transmissions between device-to-device (D2D) communications is disclosed. The distributed scheduling method employs a distributed scheduling structure in which device identifiers rather than connection identifiers are used to enable scheduling of a D2D data transfer between devices in a wireless neighborhood. The novel distributed scheduling structure is scalable to a larger number of D2D devices than is feasible with a connection identifier-based tone matrix.

  • Patent number: 9094854
Abstract: Systems and methods for establishing power saving data transmissions with machine-to-machine (M2M) communication capable devices and like user equipment in wireless networks are generally disclosed herein. One embodiment includes data transmission techniques to bundle small M2M data packet transmissions in an initial wireless network access process, performed before the device begins to negotiate the wireless network connection with a base station (BS). If the M2M data is successfully transmitted to the BS in the initial communication(s), then further connection does not need to occur, saving power and transmissions needed to negotiate and establish the wireless network connection. Configurations for a system, base station, and user equipment (user equipment including various M2M communication capable devices) are also described herein, including configurations for implementing the data transmission techniques.

  • Publication number: 20150189458
Abstract: A delegate-based group channel access method is disclosed for machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. The delegate-based group channel access method groups M2M devices having common characteristics together, assigns a single delegate or multiple delegates from the group according to some criteria, and uses the assigned delegate to perform channel access. This method avoids unnecessary peer-to-peer communication between M2M devices reduces the probability of collision on the channel during initial channel access, and reduces the control signaling overhead. The, delegate-based group channel access method also coordinates the number of slots to backoff so that all M2M devices in the group keep pace with the delegate.

  • Patent number: 9066258
Abstract: Schemes for recovering D2D connections between terminals (UEs) in an LTE network are described. The schemes may be applied in situations where a D2D connection is established between two UEs but is lost by, for example, one of the UEs entering a sleep state. The schemes may be applied to either centralized or distributed D2D systems. Some of the schemes are eNB-assisted while others are performed solely by the UEs.

  • Patent number: 8934437
Abstract: An apparatus and method that allow user equipment (UE) to transmit information directly with other user equipment, using a device-to-device (D2D) mode is disclosed herein. A first D2D UE (dUE1) that wishes so communicate to a second D2D UE (dUE2) in D2D mode makes various communications requests to an Evolved Node B (eNB), which can facilitate the connection between the dUE1 and the dUE2. Among these requests are to make the D2D connection via WiFi instead of via Long Term Evolution (LTE). The eNB determines the WiFi capabilities of dUE1 and dUE2, then assigns a subset of available channels to be scanned by dUE1 and a separate subset of available channels to be scanned by dUE2. Thereafter, the eNB can assign a WiFi channel based on the scans performed by dUE1 and dUE2.

Abstract: Embodiments of a system and method for transmitting data from an access point in a multiple user multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) system are provided. A first indication of signal quality (ISQ) is received at the access point from a first station and a second ISQ is received from a second station. The access point sets a first power level and a first modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for transmission of a first aggregated media access control (MAC) protocol data unit (A-MPDU) to the first station as a function of the first ISQ and an amount of payload data corresponding to the first A-MPDU. The access point also sets a second power level and a second MCS for transmission of a second A-MPDU as a function of the second ISQ and an amount of payload data corresponding to the second A-MPDU.

  • Publication number: 20140295858
Abstract: Embodiments of a system and method for distributed channel access for device-to-device (D2D) communication in a wireless network are generally described herein. User equipment (UE) may transmit a connection identifier (CID) code at a beginning of a contention window to request channel access for a D2D transmission to a receiving device. Links for D2D transmissions from a transmitting device to a receiving device are identified by a CID that is mapped to a CID code. The UE may receive a bandwidth grant from the receiving device during the contention window, along with bandwidth grants for other CIDs, in an order based on a priority level of the CID. The UE may transmit data after reception of the bandwidth grants in time-frequency resources indicated in an associated one of the bandwidth grants. In some embodiments, spatial-reuse and variable resource size allocation are supported.

  • Publication number: 20140256324
Abstract: Briefly, in accordance with one or more embodiments, communication is made by a machine-to-machine (M2M) device with a first base station using a first group identifier, and then a handover is performed to a second base station. The M2M device listens to a message broadcast by the second base station to determine if the first group identifier should be changed. The M2M device requests assignment of a second group identifier for communication with the second base station if it is determined that the group identifier should be changed for the M2M device. In some embodiments, the M2M device wake from an idle mode to listen to a message broadcast by the base station. If the message indicates that a group identifier should be changed, the M2M device requests assignment of an updated group identifier.
