    Abstract: A process for preparing stable dry powders which are insoluble in hot water and which contain fat-soluble vitamins and/or carotenoids, which comprises the following steps:a) preparing an aqueous dispersion containing essentially these fat-soluble active substances, film-forming colloids and reducing sugars,b) converting this dispersion into dry vitamin and/or carotenoid products in powder form andc) thermally curing the powder at from 60.degree. to 180.degree. C.,wherein gelatin in combination with one or more organic amino compounds which are free or bonded in the manner of a salt and which contain a basic primary amino group and, in addition, either another amino group, a hydroxyl group, an alkoxy group or a carboxyl group, and/or in combination with sufficient basic alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compound for the dispersion to have a pH of from 7.5 to 10, is used as film-forming colloid, and the dry powders obtainable via this process are described.

    Abstract: Glowing coke descending through a cooling duct in a coking plant is quenched by two gas flows respectively traversing an upper compartment and a lower compartment of the duct, the two compartments meeting at a restricted gate for the passage of the coke. At least the lower gas flow, passing in countercurrent to the descending coke charge, is also circulated through a drying and preheating oven for coal to be fed to a coke-oven battery of the plant, thus containing some water vapor. When the upper flow is also constituted by coal-drying gas, it is passed downward through the upper compartment in order to reduce the height of a high-temperature zone in which combustion and thus loss of coke could occur. The coke gate is formed by a funnel-shaped upper partition and an upwardly pointing conical lower partition between which a scavenger gas passes in cross-flow.

    Abstract: A chopper has a housing centered on an axis and having a radially open input and a radially open output spaced angularly therefrom as well as a pair of axially oppositely open intakes, and a cutter drum rotatable in the housing about the axis and having a pair of end plates transverse of the axis and having axially oppositely directed faces confronting the respective intakes and a plurality of blades secured to and between the end plates and having cutting edges defining on rotation of the drum an orbit centered on the axis. Respective pluralities of vanes at the end plates can be secured either to the respective end plates in in-service positions extending generally radially thereon so that rotation of the drum moves the vanes to draw air in the axial intakes and expel it through the radial output or in an out-of-service position in which they do not move appreciable air. The vanes can be secured in the out-of-service position also to the respective end plates but extending generally only angularly.

    Abstract: A process for pulverizing substances which are sensitive to oxidation, in particular oily substances, by dispersing oil-soluble substances, e.g. vitamins, carotinoids, pharmaceutically active compounds or aromas, in an aqueous solution of a film-forming colloid, which constitutes the continuous phase of the dispersion, with the addition of one or more substances from the group comprising the mono-, di- and polysaccharides, atomizing the dispersion, in a spray tower, in the presence of a spraying assistant and collecting the resulting particles in a fluidized bed, wherein, as the spraying auxiliary, a hydrophobic silica or a metal salt of a higher fatty acid is introduced above the fluidized bed and distributed uniformly in the spraying space, at a temperature at which the colloid of the atomized particles has not yet solidified, and the assistant-laden particles, colloid material of which essentially has not yet gelatinized, is collected in a fluidized bed, and dried therein in a conventional manner.

The adsorbent is made by subjecting the mixture to a shaping step followed by heating to a temperature of about 400.degree. to 1400.degree. C in an inert atmosphere which step may be followed by an activation of the carbonaceous material.

The ram compacts the crop material in this channel which extends in the travel direction, whereupon the bale is tied and the finished bale ejected at the rearward end of the channel.

The new 2(or 3)-methyl-1-acetoxy-4-alkoxy(or phenoxy)-1,3-butadienes are obtained by heating the corresponding methyl-4-alkoxy(or phenoxy)-crotonaldehyde with an excess of acetic anhydride and an alkali metal acetate, alkali metal carbonate or alkali metal hydroxide or a non-aromatic bicyclic amine or by heating the corresponding methyl-1-acetoxy-4,4-dialkoxy-2-butene in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid and quinoline at a temperature of from 150.degree. to 260.degree. C. The new compounds are of very considerable importance as intermediates in the synthesis of carotenoids.
