Patent number: 10160696Abstract: The oligomerization of ethylene using a chromium catalyst having a heteroatomic ligand may be used to provide oligomerization products that are selective towards hexene and/or octene. However, such processes also typically produce some polymer as an undesirable by product. The present invention is directed towards improvements in the selective oligomerization of ethylene.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2016Date of Patent: December 25, 2018Assignee: NOVA Chemicals (International) S.A.Inventors: Isam Jaber, Ian Ronald Jobe, P Scott Chisholm, Andrzej Krzywicki, Charles Ashton Garret Carter, Vernon Lindsay Strom, Kamal Elias Serhal, Eric Clavelle, Stephen John Brown, Yves Lacombe, Anita Sylvia Magis, Mackenzie Alexander Harris, Russell Kirk Archer, Keith WAyne Besenski, Michel Berghmans, Oleksiy Golovchenko, Dale Alexander Sieben

Patent number: 9115224Abstract: A supported catalyst system comprising a phosphinimine ligand containing catalyst on an alumina support treated with a metal salt has improved reactor continuity in a dispersed phase reaction in terms of initial activation and subsequent deactivation. The resulting catalyst has a lower consumption of ethylene during initiation and a lower rate of deactivation. Preferably the catalyst is used with an antistatic agent.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2012Date of Patent: August 25, 2015Assignee: NOVA CHEMICALS (INTERNATIONAL) S.A.Inventors: Lee Douglas Henderson, Peter Phung Minh Hoang, Ian Ronald Jobe, Xiaoliang Gao

Patent number: 8846811Abstract: A dual catalyst system comprising a phosphinimine ligand containing catalyst and phenoxide ligand (preferably a salicylaldimine) on a support treated with a metal salt has improved reactor continuity in a dispersed phase reaction in terms of initial activation and subsequent deactivation The resulting catalyst has a lower consumption of ethylene during initiation and a lower rate of deactivation. Preferably the catalyst is used with an antistatic agent.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 2012Date of Patent: September 30, 2014Assignee: Nova Chemicals (International) S.A.Inventors: Lee Douglas Henderson, Peter Phung Minh Hoang, Ian Ronald Jobe, Xiaoliang Gao

Patent number: 8802584Abstract: A supported catalyst system comprising a phosphinimine ligand containing catalyst on a porous inorganic support treated with a metal salt has improved reactor continuity in a dispersed phase reaction in terms of initial activation and subsequent deactivation. The resulting catalyst has a lower consumption of ethylene during initiation and a lower rate of deactivation. Preferably the catalyst is used with an antistatic agent.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2012Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Nova Chemicals (International) S.A.Inventors: Lee Douglas Henderson, Peter Phung Minh Hoang, Ian Ronald Jobe, Xiaoliang Gao

Patent number: 8298978Abstract: Single site reactor/catalyst continuity in a dispersed phase reaction in terms of initial activation and subsequent deactivation may be improved by treating the support with a metal salt. The activator and catalyst are then deposited on the treated support. The resulting catalyst has a lower consumption of ethylene during initiation and a lower rate of deactivation. Preferably the catalyst is used with an antistatic agent.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2010Date of Patent: October 30, 2012Assignee: Nova Chemicals (International) S.A.Inventors: Xiaoliang Gao, Billy Gaspar Santos, Peter Phung Minh Hoang, Amy Marie Jones, Benjamin Milton Shaw, Ian Ronald Jobe

Publication number: 20120271087Abstract: The oligomerization of ethylene using a chromium catalyst and an aluminoxane activator is well known. The undesired formation of polyethylene as a by-product is also known to occur during prior oligomerization processes. We have discovered that the use of an aluminoxane that is prepared by non-hydrolytic means provides a highly productive activator (co-catalyst) for ethylene oligomerization and mitigates the undesired formation of by-product polyethylene.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2012Publication date: October 25, 2012Applicant: NOVA CHEMICALS (INTERNATIONAL) S.A.Inventors: Stephen John Brown, Charles Ashton Garret Carter, P. Publication number: 20110257350Abstract: Ethylene is selectively oligomerized in a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) that is preferably operated in an isothermal manner using a chromium catalyst. The undesired formation of by-product polyethylene is mitigated by contacting the ethylene with hydrogen prior to adding the ethylene to the reactor and feeding the ethylene and hydrogen via a common feed port.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 6, 2011Publication date: October 20, 2011Inventors: Isam Jaber, Charles Ashton Garret Carter, Eric Clavelle, Andrzej Krzywicki, Ian Ronald Jobe, P.
