    Abstract: Aircraft flaps provide rearwardly convergent channels which terminate at or near the trailing edges of the flaps. The forward intakes of the channels are closed when the flaps are elevated and open when the flaps are depressed. A control is programmed to operate the flaps so as to maintain minimum drag until sufficient ground speed is attained for take-off, and to limit the velocity of air discharged from the channels to sub-sonic speeds.
