  • Patent number: 4097921
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for automatically determining the oxygen dissociation curve (ODC) of whole blood or of a hemoglobin solution. Blood or hemoglobin having a predetermined oxygen saturation level are admixed with deoxygenated blood or a hemoglobin solution and the oxygen partial pressure of the mixture, while being formed, is measured. The output of the P.sub.O.sbsb.2 electrode, in the form of an electrical signal, is fed into a computer and two functions of the P.sub.O.sbsb.2 (saturation and total oxygen) are calculated, giving the required curve by means of recording and/or displaying means. In this way, the ODC can be determined for whole blood under near physiological conditions of pH, hemoglobin concentration, hematocrit, temperature, P.sub.CO.sbsb.2, and organic phosphates content.

  • Patent number: 4013417
Abstract: This specification describes a new analyzer for the determination of total hemoglobin; percent oxyhemoglobin, deoxyhemoglobin, methmoglobin, sulfhemoglobin; and oxygen capacity in a micro sample (5 to 10 .mu.l) of hole human blood. The essential components of the analyzer are (1) a cuvette in which simultaneous measurements of PO.sub.2 (by an oxygen electrode) and absorbance (by a dual wavelength optical system) are made, (2) an automatic pump system for filling and emptying the cuvette, (3) an equilibrating tonometer to equilibrate the reagent with air or another gas phase, (4) electronic circuits for the measurement of light intensity and oxygen pressure, (5) an analogue computer, and (6) a printer. Other essential parts of the invention are (a) original procedures and (b) ad hoc developed physico-chemical equations.

  • Patent number: 3973915
Abstract: Equilibrator device for use in determination of the acid-base status, the oxygen dissociation curve of blood and other properties of physiological interest. The device comprises, within a confined and thermostatically controlled environment, a cuvette for accommodating a sample of blood or other liquid to be equilibrated with a gas phase, means for controlledly rotating such cuvette and means for promoting passage of a gaseous flow firstly through a humidifying ambient and then into the presence of said sample.
