Publication number: 20240044210Abstract: Methods, computing systems, and computer-readable media for dynamically adjusting drilling parameters during a drilling operation. The approach involves receiving, in real time, drilling parameter measurements and response measurements during a drilling operation. If the response measurements are below the lower limit of a window or trending downwards, the approach determines a new drilling parameter value that will increase the response measurement. The approach dynamically adjusts the drilling parameter value above the sectional limit, while still respecting hard limits. When the measured value improves, the approach returns the limit for the drilling parameter to the sectional limit.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 17, 2021Publication date: February 8, 2024Inventors: James Belaskie, Robert Hughes Jr., Nathaniel Wicks, James Foley, Rafael Guedes de Carvalho, Teddy Cheryl Michael Nkounkou

Patent number: 10900342Abstract: A method for controlling an automatic drilling system includes measuring at least one drilling operating parameter applied to a drill string disposed in a wellbore when the drill string is suspended above the bottom of a wellbore. The drill string is lowered to drill the wellbore when the wellbore. At least one relationship is established between the at least one measured drilling operating parameter and corresponding values of a drilling response parameter at the surface and at the bottom of the drill string. A value of a rate of penetration parameter at surface is selected to operate the automatic drilling system so as to optimize a rate of penetration parameter at the bottom of the drill string.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2016Date of Patent: January 26, 2021Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: James Belaskie, Richard John Meehan

Patent number: 10108155Abstract: A changepoint detector for modeling data received from at least one sensor in a process in the hydrocarbon industry. The data is segmented into a plurality of segments and for each segment a model is assigned and the data corresponding to the segment fit to that model. A plurality of segmentations are thus provided and these segmentations are evaluated and assigned weights indicative of the fit of the models of the segmentation to the underlying data. The segmentation models are further used to calculate a result that may be input to a process control program.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2014Date of Patent: October 23, 2018Assignee: SCHLUMBERGER TECHNOLOGY CORPORATIONInventors: Walter Aldred, Jonathan Dunlop, James Belaskie

Patent number: 8705318Abstract: A method for aggregating data for a drilling operation. The method includes acquiring the data from a number of data sources associated with the drilling operation, synchronizing a timing of the data for aggregating the data to generate synchronized aggregated data, determining a drilling context based on the synchronized aggregated data, and assigning the determined drilling context to the synchronized aggregated data. The method further includes analyzing the synchronized aggregated data in the drilling context to generate an analysis and presenting the analysis to at least one user.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2009Date of Patent: April 22, 2014Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: Shunfeng Zheng, Mbaga Louis Ahorukomeye, James Belaskie
