  • Patent number: 6260514
Abstract: A revised boiling chamber geometry in a vaporizer provides a scale collection area which prevents occlusion of the water inlet. A detachable scale collection cup allows for easy removal and cleaning of the cup.

  • Patent number: 6245024
Abstract: A blood pressure cuff which, when the cuff is being applied to the patient, automatically indicates when the proper amount of tension in the cuff has been reached. The blood pressure cuff includes a tension sensor disposed on an end which the user grips, constructed of elastomeric or elastic material, including accordion-like ridges. The ridges include a graphic which is partially or substantially hidden when less then the proper amount of tension is applied to the blood pressure cuff, and which is substantially viewable when the proper amount of tension is applied to the blood pressure cuff. The tension sensor may include an indicator area which is substantially hidden by a set of folds until a pre-set amount of tension is applied.

  • Patent number: 5715360
Abstract: A pulse injection steam hairsetter which efficiently and safely heats hair curlers prior to use includes a housing that has a base for placement on a supporting surface and defines a recess for a replaceable water canister, the housing also defining a treatment chamber in which a hair curler can be placed and including a pulse steam supply mechanism for supplying pulses of steam to the treatment chamber, and more particularly to internally of a hair curler placed therein. The pulse steam supply mechanism includes an electric heating device for supplying steam to the treatment chamber, a manually operable bellows pump device, and hoses for delivering water from a water canister positioned in the recess to the bellows pump device and from the bellows pump device to the heating device. A one way valve between the bellows pump device and the heating device controls the flow of water in the proper direction. A cover can enclose the treatment chamber and be used to operate the bellows pump device.

  • Patent number: 5708256
Abstract: A heating pad controller is provided which varies the duty cycle during which power is applied to a heating pad heating element. In one embodiment according to the present invention, an oscillator circuit is used to vary the off-time of the duty cycle, with the on-time portion being fixed. User control of the off-time is provided by way of a rotary control knob connected to a potentiometer. The potentiometer is part of the oscillator circuit and is used to vary the resistance through which a capacitor in the oscillator circuit charges up. The output of the oscillator circuit is used to control the gate of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), which acts as a power switch through which power is applied to the heating element. During power up, the oscillator circuit is overridden and a continuous control signal is applied to the SCR to provide constant power to the heating element to thereby achieve rapid heating.

  • Patent number: 5555637
Abstract: A drying apparatus such as a hand-held hair dryer comprising a housing including a nozzle and containing an air outlet and a fan assembly contained within the housing for generating a flow of air from the outlet. The apparatus further includes a flow guide including a plurality of holes therein contained within the nozzle, the flow guide forming a closed shape in cross-section and having open ends. The flow guide is separated from the nozzle so as to form a space between the nozzle and the flow guide for flow of air therethrough. The flow guide tends to attenuate noise generated by operation of the apparatus by lowering the frequency of the noise.

  • Patent number: 5270520
Abstract: The invention is directed to a hair styling appliance having heat conductive portion for applying heat to the hair and an electrically energizable heater element located in thermal relationship with the heat conductive portion for causing it to be heated upon application of energy. A temperature sensor is located in thermal relationship with the heat conductive portion. The temperature sensor is electrically connected to the heater element and has a positive temperature coefficient of resistance. A pulse switching device is operatively coupled to the heater and responsively coupled to the temperature sensor for controlling energization of the heater with temperature. A selectable temperature setting circuit is coupled to the pulse switching device for varying energization of the heater in accordance with a selected temperature operation.
