  • Publication number: 20100200213
Abstract: Force balancing adjusts hydraulic fluid pressure in an upper piston area of a Rotating Pressure Control Device (RPCD) that has an inner housing rotatably engaged within an outer housing by an upper bearing and a lower bearing. The hydraulic fluid pressure is adjusted to balance net force in a upper piston area and a lower piston area. The fluid pressure adjustment creates a force differential that balances the total load transmitted through the upper bearing and the lower bearing and thereby extends the life of the sealing element and bearings. Additionally, a wear indicator signals the end of the useful life of the drill pipe sealing element.

  • Publication number: 20100132382
Abstract: The subject invention pertains to a method and apparatus for an orientation independent compressor. The subject compressor can be part of a vapor compression cycle system, and can use one or more of a variety of working fluids, including, but not limited to, refrigerants such as r-134a, r-22, CO2, and NH3. Embodiments of the compressor can utilize positive displacement means to compress the vapor. In a specific embodiment, the compressor can incorporate an oil-lubricated rotary lobed type positive displacement compressor. In a further specific embodiment, the working fluid can be a refrigerant, such as r-134a, incorporating entrained oil, such as miscible lubricating oils. An example of such a miscible lubricating oil that can be used is polyester (POE) oil.

  • Patent number: 7710105
Abstract: A method of testing power-on reset circuitry in an integrated circuit comprises establishing the a first state of the integrated circuit that is different from a normal reset state of the circuit, lowering the VCC power supply voltage from a normal high operating level VH to a specified lower level VP then raising it back to the normal high level, then determining whether or not the integrated circuit has assumed the reset state. The testing can repeated with a plurality of lower VCC levels VP and under a variety of operating conditions to characterize resetting parameters and to designate pass/fail results for individual chips. If an AC voltage detector is part of the power-on reset circuitry, then it can tested separately, and DC testing occurs with very slow ramp rates for lowering and raising the power supply voltage.

  • Patent number: 7537062
Abstract: An improved flapper valve is disclosed comprising a housing, a flapper pivotally engaged to the housing, and an actuator slidingly engaged in the housing and adapted to make initial contact with the flapper at a seat end. The seat end is an area surrounding a point on a flapper bottom surface that is furthest from the location of pivotal engagement of the flapper and the housing but not in contact with the housing. The flapper closes at an acute angle to the longitudinal axis of the housing. The actuator is hollow and the interior of the actuator forms a through bore. In the closed position the flapper prevents fluid from the passing through the bore.

  • Publication number: 20090060801
Abstract: The invention uses a feed of atmospheric air and mixes the air with hydrogen. The hydrogen and air mixture is fed into a catalytic reactor where a deoxygenation reaction occurs. The deoxygenation reaction uses a platinum catalyst to produce water from oxygen and hydrogen. The nitrogen passes through the catalytic reactor without reacting with the hydrogen, the oxygen, or the water. The water is separated from the nitrogen in a dryer. The nitrogen may then be used in drilling and production operations. The water is fed into an electrolyzer where an electrolysis reaction occurs. The electrolyzer passes an electrical current through the water to produce gaseous oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen is recycled back to the catalytic reactor and the oxygen may be vented or sold.

  • Patent number: 7373995
Abstract: The invention is an improved rotary steerable tool. The improved rotary steerable tool comprises a control tube that slides vertical within a mandrel in response to changes in drilling fluid pressure, thereby opening and closing a channel between the mandrel and a piston chamber in a rotationally isolated sleeve. With the channel open, a piston in the piston chamber is exposed to the drilling fluid. When the drilling pressure is sufficient to cause the piston to move, the piston forces a deflection pad outward. After the deflection pad engages a borehole wall, any additional increases in pressure force the opposing side of sleeve toward the opposite wall, thereby tilting the direction of any attached drill bit. An optional guide lug and alignment sleeve orient the deflection pad with respect to other components.
