  • Patent number: 11226444
Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with input-output devices and other components such as optical components that emit light and optical components that detect light. An optical component covering structure may be interposed between an interior region of the electronic device and an exterior region that surrounds the electronic device. The optical components may be formed in the interior region of the electronic device. The optical component covering structure may overlap the optical components. The optical component covering structure may be configured to exhibit a flat visible light transmission spectrum. This neutral light transmission characteristic allows the overlapped optical components to emit and/or receive light through the optical component covering structure without imposing an undesired color cast. The optical component covering structure may include first and second layers with complementary light transmission characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20210356991
Abstract: An electronic device may have a display for displaying images. The display may be coupled to a housing on a front face of the device. The housing may have a transparent portion on an opposing rear face of the device. The electronic device may have structures with an adjustable appearance. The adjustable-appearance structures may include a mask with openings or other mask elements and a corresponding overlapped patterned layer containing an array of visual elements. The visual elements may have different appearances, so that movement of the mask relative to the patterned layer changes the appearance of the adjustable-appearance structures. The state of the adjustable-appearance structure may be changed during use of the device by a user or may be adjusted then fixed during manufacturing.

  • Patent number: 11175956
Abstract: Multiple electronic devices may be used together in a system. The electronic devices may use sensor measurements and other information to detect when an edge of a first electronic device is adjacent to an edge of a second electronic device. In response to detection of adjacency between the edges of the first and second devices, the devices may transition from an independent operating mode in which each device operates separately to a joint operating mode in which resources of the devices are shared. In the joint operating mode, images may extend across displays in the devices, speakers in the devices may be used to play different channels of an audio track, cameras and other sensors may be used in cooperation with each other, and other resources may be shared. Magnetic components may hold devices together in a variety of orientations.

  • Patent number: 11119312
Abstract: An electronic device such as a head-mounted device may have a transparent member supported by head-mounted support structures. Optical sensors such as time-of-flight sensors and other optical sensors may have light-emitting components and light-detecting components. A stray light blocking structure may be formed in the transparent member. The stray light blocking structure may be configured to block stray light that is traveling laterally through an interior portion of the polymer layer. This prevents the stray light from being received by the light-detecting detecting device. The stray light blocking structure may formed by providing the polymer layer with light redirecting structures such as protrusions and/or recesses. Light-absorbing coatings and/or patterned surfaces such as textured surfaces may be incorporated into the stray light blocking structure.

  • Patent number: 11050867
Abstract: An electronic device may have a housing in which electrical components such as a display and other components are mounted. Adjustable decoration may be formed on the electronic device. The adjustable decoration may serve as trim for the housing or a component mounted on the housing, may include a logo, or may be used to form other visual elements. The adjustable decoration may have an appearance that is electrically adjustable by control circuitry in the electronic device. The control circuitry may measure sensor data using sensors, may gather user input from input-output devices, and may gather other information with input-output devices to detect events. When an event is detected such as an incoming communication, a calendar reminder, user input, activation of an electrical component such as a camera, or other event, the control circuitry can adjust the appearance of the adjustable decoration.

  • Publication number: 20210181512
Abstract: An electronic device has an electrically adjustable optical layer. Displays and other optical components may be supported by a housing structure. The housing structure may form a handheld device housing, a head-mounted housing, or other housing for the electronic device. Control circuitry in the electronic device may adjust the electrically adjustable optical layer. The control circuitry may reduce light transmission for the electrically adjustable optical layer to hide the optical components, may increase light transmission to reveal the optical components while the optical components are being used to receive light or to output light, and may otherwise adjust the electrically adjustable optical layer to exhibit a desired set of optical characteristics depending on the mode of operation of the electronic device.

  • Patent number: 11002066
Abstract: A system such as a vehicle system or building system may have an enclosing structure such as a wall that surrounds an interior region and separates the interior region from an exterior region. An occupant of the system may be located in the interior region. An adjustable window in the enclosing structure may be located between the interior and exterior regions. Control circuitry in the system may use an exterior sensor system in the exterior region to capture an image of the environment surrounding the system, to locate external objects such as light sources, and to make other measurements. User input can be gathered from the occupant of the system and the location of the occupant and inanimate objects in the interior region can be gathered using an interior sensor system. The control circuitry can adjust the window based on the gathered information.

  • Patent number: 10978777
Abstract: A system such as a vehicle may have windows. A window may have a structural window layer formed from one or more glass layers. A conductive coating such as an infrared-light blocking coating or other optical filter layer may be formed on the window. The conductive coating may include one or more silver layers or other conductive material. Unpatterned portions of the conductive coating are conductive along orthogonal dimensions. A region of the conductive coating may have parallel line-shaped openings that render the coating conductive in only a single dimension while enhancing radio transparency. Another region of the conductive coating may have a two-dimensional pattern of openings such as a mesh-shaped opening formed from intersecting straight and/or curved lines. In this region, the coating is locally rendered insulating and radio-frequency transparent. Antennas and ohmic heating elements may be formed in the coating.

  • Patent number: 10928566
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an infrared reflective coating for use on an electronic device. More specifically, the infrared reflective includes an array of polymer structures spaced and sized in such a manner as to reflect infrared light. Thus, when the coating is placed on one or more surfaces or components of the electronic device, that surface or component reflects infrared light and the heat associated with the infrared light instead of absorbing it.

  • Publication number: 20210033757
Abstract: An electronic device may have a housing surrounding an interior in which electrical components are mounted. A display may be mounted to housing structures in the device. The housing may have a rear wall. The display cover layer and rear wall of the housing may be formed from transparent glass layers. Coatings may be formed on inwardly facing surfaces of the transparent glass layers. A coating on a transparent glass layer may be formed from a thin-film interference filter having a stack of dielectric layers. The coating may include an ink layer on the thin-film interference filter. The transparent glass layers may have one or more textured surfaces that allow light at high angles to enter the transparent layers and reflect off the coatings at high angles, thereby adjusting optical properties of the coatings.

  • Patent number: 10902796
Abstract: Electronic equipment in a system such as a vehicle or building may include one or more displays. The displays may display image frames for users with light-modulating glasses. The image frames may include interspersed image frames corresponding to unique content for each of the users. Dummy frames may be incorporated into the displayed frames on the display to help obscure displayed content from external observers. The light-modulating glasses may have light modulators such as liquid crystal light modulators. Control circuitry in the glasses may adjust the light modulators to exhibit transparent intervals that overlaps desired image frames and opaque intervals that are aligned with other image frames and the dummy frames. This allows each user to view unique content on a shared display while preventing external observers without glasses from observing the content that is being presented.

  • Patent number: 10866615
Abstract: An electronic device display may have an inner layer with a pixel array for displaying images and an outer layer with an array of light modulator cells operable in transparent and light-blocking modes. Force sensor and touch sensor circuitry may be used to gather user input such as information on finger pressure or stylus input applied to a location on the display.
