    Abstract: A system for expediting IP address assignment. An apparatus that desires to initiate a connection with another apparatus may be deemed an initiator (e.g., or a “handover requester” in Near Field Communications, or NFC, terminology). In the instance that an apparatus is deemed to be an initiator, a further determination may be made as to whether the initiator is already a member of a network. If the initiator is determined not to already be a member of a network, the initiator may provide IP address configuration information usable by the other apparatus for assigning an IP address to the initiator. The IP address that is set in the initiator may then be based on an IP address provided to the initiator by the other apparatus in response to the previously sent IP address configuration information.

The user of the terminal updates the parameters specifying the compression methods of the terminal, the characteristics parameters of the terminal being modified in the terminal in accordance with this update, and the modified characteristics parameters are transmitted to a function comprised by the radio network. The modified characteristics parameters are used to configure the use of a compression method for each simultaneous radio bearer of the terminal.

A telecommunication protocol comprises a convergence protocol layer for adapting user data packets to convergence protocol packets and a link layer for transmitting the convergence protocol packets as data units and for acknowledging the transmission. A data packet number is defined for the convergence protocol packets to be transmitted. The convergence protocol packets are transferred to the link layer to be transmitted. A data packet number is defined for the received convergence protocol packets and the received convergence protocol packets are acknowledged to the transmitter. The identification data of any convergence protocol packets lost on the link layer are transmitted to the recipient. The counter value of the recipient is updated to correspond to the counter value of the transmitter, to take into account the lost convergence protocol packets.
