  • Publication number: 20080123577
Abstract: An approach is provided for an approach to manage a power saving scheme for multicast or broadcast services. A signal is received from a terminal configured to utilize a power-save mechanism. State of a multicast or broadcast group is determined for the terminal based on the signal. The power-save mechanism of the terminal is bypassed if the state is determined to be active to permit transmission of data, which is designated for the multicast or the broadcast group, to the terminal.

  • Publication number: 20070249331
Abstract: The invention relates to a mechanism for using services provided by a network in an environment including user-operated short-range wireless terminals and short-range wireless peripheral devices, such as wireless storage units, controllable by the user-operated terminals. A wireless peripheral device is informed that a network providing services is to be accessed, as a result of which the wireless peripheral device accesses the said network. A service is then selected from the infrastructure network by the user-operated terminal, while also indicating that the party requesting the selected service is the peripheral device. The selected service is delivered to the wireless peripheral device through the infrastructure network.

  • Publication number: 20070201468
Abstract: Various embodiments are disclosed relating to multicast group address signaling using a MAC header for power save delivery in a wireless network. According to an example embodiment, a multicast management frame (e.g., a multicast 802.11n Power Save Multi Poll (PSMP) frame) may be transmitted to identify a scheduled multicast data transmission to one or more receiver nodes in a wireless network. The multicast management frame may include a multicast group address provided in a Medium Access Control (MAC) destination address field of a MAC header of the management frame. The management frame may also include one or more downlink transmission fields to identify a time and/or duration of the scheduled multicast data transmission.

  • Publication number: 20070191052
Abstract: A mechanism to create Automatic Power Save Delivery (APSD) compatible with 802.11n frame aggregation and block acknowledgement (ack) mechanisms is provided. Various methods of using block acknowledgments are provided. Additionally, bit handling for defining an unscheduled APSD (U-APSD) service period and ending it is explained. A method of aggregating a plurality of data frames into an aggregated data frame, starting a service period based on the transmitting of the aggregated frame, receiving an acknowledgement for the transmitted frame, and upon receiving the acknowledgement frame containing an indicator indicating end of service period, entering low power mode of operation is enabled.

  • Publication number: 20070127478
Abstract: The present invention provides a new and unique method and apparatus for communicating information between two nodes, points or terminals in a wireless local area network (WLAN), where a variable multicast and/or broadcast listening interval and associated signalling is allowed between the two nodes, points or terminals in the wireless LAN network. The two nodes, points or terminals include an access point (AP) or other suitable network node or terminal and a station (STA) or other suitable network node or terminal in the WLAN. The AP and the STA can indicate its capability to support a flexible multicast and broadcast listening interval by using new fields in Beacon and Probe Response frames and in (Re)Association Request Frames. The multicast and broadcast service is setup by using Multicast and Broadcast Service Setup signalling.

  • Publication number: 20070002782
Abstract: An improved system and method for enabling communication among devices in wireless networks. The present invention involves the introduction of a new terminal class, referred to herein as an accessory class, to a WLAN network. The present invention allows for direct transmissions between accessories and terminals as a part of the service period. According to the present invention, the terminal transmits a request for stream setup to an access point. The access point provides a response to the terminal, after which the terminal prepares an accessory stream setup request to be transmitted to the accessory based upon the received response. The accessory stream setup request indicates the desired operation mode of the accessory.

  • Patent number: 7120852
Abstract: A method and apparatus for aggregating packets in a wireless communication system. The data to be transmitted is selected and packetized and formed into frames for transmission. Rather than send each frame individually, frames are grouped and transmitted with grouping indicia informing the recipients how to acknowledge successful receipt of the transmitted data. ACKs are sent at a predetermined time, or all together, divided by subcarrier in the case of an OFDMA network.

  • Publication number: 20060193315
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for broadcasting beacon frames in a short-range wireless ad-hoc network including a plurality of wireless terminals. In order to improve the efficiency of the ad-hoc network in terms of power consumption, the terminal that defines the beacon interval for the network starts as a beacon broadcaster and introduces an identifier list in at least some of the beacon frames broadcast in the network. The identifier list, which includes identifiers of the wireless terminals belonging to the network, is utilized if another wireless terminal is to be selected as the beacon broadcaster.

  • Publication number: 20060045022
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating communication of a packet acknowledgment in a packet communication system. Detectors detect the data rate at which data packets are communicated to a receiving station and whether the data packets are successfully delivered to the receiving station. A packet acknowledgment frame generator generates a packet acknowledgment frame that is of values responsive to the detection made by the detectors and is transmitted at a transmission rate responsive to the detected data rate.

  • Publication number: 20050177639
Abstract: A wireless device transmits beacon packets at periodically occurring time intervals across a wireless channel. When the wireless communications device has not formed a piconet with one or more remote devices, the device scans the wireless channel for a predetermined amount of time immediately following each of the periodically occurring time intervals. During this time a remote device may respond to the beacon packet.

  • Publication number: 20020022455
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for reducing the power consumption of a wireless terminal (MT1-MT4) communicating with an access point (AP1, AP2). In the method, the wireless terminal (MT1-MT4) is set to dormancy. An in-operation message (408) is transmitted at intervals from the wireless terminal (MT1-MT4) to the access point (AP1, AP2), wherein the wireless terminal is set in an active state for transmitting the in-operation message (408). In the method, the wireless terminal is returned to dormancy substantially immediately after the transmission of the in-operation message (408).
