  • Patent number: 9157189
Abstract: The invention provides a method of controlling retention on a forming fabric in a paper making process, an intermediate product for use in the method, as well as use of material for the intermediate product. For making the intermediate product at least one paper making chemical is added to a slurry of fine cellulose fibres such as micro fibrillated cellulose (MFC), the specific surface area of those fibres being larger than that of the fibres of the main fibrous suspension for paper making, causing the paper making chemical being adsorbed on the fine cellulose fibres. This intermediate product is then incorporated in the main fibrous suspension before the suspension is supplied from the paper machine head box to the forming fabric. Other paper making chemicals may be added to the fibrous suspension before or after addition of the intermediate product, so that interactions between different chemicals are prevented.

  • Patent number: 9079978
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of treating chemical pulp fibers by a polymerizing hydroxy acid, the fibers thus obtained and the products refined from them. In the method, the hydroxy acid reacts with the reactive groups of the fibers in the presence of a catalyst, forming ester bonds. The following units of the same hydroxy acid are oligomerized and/or polymerized to these grafted acid residues. The fibers thus treated and the products refined thereof endure better processing stages that include drawing and stretching than untreated fibers.

  • Publication number: 20150175500
Abstract: A method of deoxygenation of tall oil as well as methods for the production of aliphatic hydrocarbons and polymerizable monomers from tall oil. Sulphurous crude tall oil together with hydrogen gas is fed into a reactor comprising a catalyst bed. The oil is catalytically deoxygenated by hydrogen in the bed by use of a sulfided metal catalyst, e.g. a NiMoS catalyst. The flow exiting the reactor is cooled down and a hydrocarbon-bearing liquid phase is separated from a gas phase, followed by subjecting the liquid phase to distillation for removal of useless aromatic hydrocarbons and then to steam cracking to form a product containing olefins such as ethylene or propylene. By regulation of the deoxygenation temperature to be at least 270° C. but less than 360° C. the yield is rich in linear and cyclic aliphates that usefully turn to olefins in the steam cracking, while formation of napthalenes is reduced.

  • Patent number: 8957269
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of producing olefinic monomers for the production of a polymer. The invention particularly relates to the production of tall oil-based biopolymers, such as polyolefins. In the stages of the method bio oil, with a content of over 50% of fatty acids of tall oil and no more than 25% of resin acids of tall oil, and hydrogen gas are fed into a catalyst bed (7); the oil is catalytically deoxygenated in the bed by hydrogen; the flow exiting the bed is cooled down and divided into a hydrocarbon-bearing liquid phase (10) and a gas phase; and the hydrocarbon-bearing liquid (13) is subjected to steam cracking (4) to provide a product containing polymerizing olefins. The deoxygenation in the bed can be followed by a catalytic cracking or, with a suitable catalyst, the deoxygenation and cracking can be simultaneous. The separated hydrogen-bearing gas phase can be circulated in the process.

  • Publication number: 20150041529
Abstract: A deep-drawn paper tray made of paper material, a method and an apparatus for manufacturing the tray, and a closed product package comprising the tray. The tray having a bottom and upwardly expanding side walls around the bottom, the side walls of the tray being shaped to expand through a plurality of circumferential steps dimensioned low enough for obtaining wrinkle-free side walls for the tray. The outermost step is a flat, wrinkle-free rim flange, which enables liquid and gas proof heat-sealing of a lid to form the package. The apparatus may comprise upper and lower moulding tools with concentric movable frames for forming the tray bottom and side wall steps from paper blanks, and moulding tools may be mounted onto a rotating turret carrying a paper blank through working stations arranged along the turret circumference, to shape the tray bottom and the side wall steps at the consecutive stations.

  • Patent number: 8952194
Abstract: A method of manufacturing aromatic hydrocarbons, which are suitable for the production of terephthalic acid, from tall oil-based raw material. According to the invention, the raw material that contains tall oil or its fraction is catalytically deoxygenated with hydrogen, and one or more aromatic hydrocarbons that can be converted into terephthalic acid are separated from the deoxygenated reaction yield. The deoxygenation catalyst is a NiMo catalyst and, in addition, a cracking catalyst can be used, such as an acidic zeolite catalyst. The separated hydrocarbon can be p-xylene, o-xylene or p-cymene. According to the invention, these can be converted by oxidation and, when needed, by a re-arrangement reaction into terephthalic acid that is suitable for the source material of the manufacture of bio-based polyethylene terephthalate.

  • Patent number: 8852493
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for forming a mouth roll (2) to a cup (1) made of plastic-coated board and to the cup provided with a mouth roll produced by the method. The mouth roll for stiffening the cup is produced with a suitable striking tool bending the board at the mouth of the cup. In accordance with the invention, the mouth roll is additionally stabilized by melting the plastic coating (8) of the board under heat so that the opposite surfaces of the board adhere to each other by heat-sealing in the area of the roll. Melting can be performed e.g. by hot-air blasting directed to the mouth roll at is production stage.

  • Patent number: 8157959
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing board (2), a board provided by the method, and a container formed from the same, such as a disposable drinking cup. According to the invention, fiber-based stock is doped with a polymer (6), ending in a pulp web that is formed of this pulp on a board machine wire, and in a board layer (3) that is obtained from the same by pressing and drying. When the board layer is heated, the polymer melts and water vapor bubbles penetrate it, rendering the layer porous. The polymer used for the doping can comprise, for example, a low density polyethylene (LDPE) that has a melt viscosity of about 15. Pore-generating heating can be carried out for the board or only for the container manufactured from it. The porous layer prevents the hot drink enjoyed from the cup from burning the fingers of the user.

  • Patent number: 8133355
Abstract: The invention relates to a method in the wet end of a web forming process. In the method, at least one electrode pair (102, 103) is placed in the wet end. The electrode pair (102, 103) is supplied with a current/voltage from a power source (100), so that an electric field is set up between the electrode pair (102, 103), causing the material particles in the pulp suspension in the wet end to be electrically charged in a desired manner and to move in a desired manner in the pulp suspension in the wet end. The current/voltage of the power source (100) is controlled by means of a measuring and control unit (101) so as to cause the material particles in the pulp suspension to be electrically charged and to move in a desired manner, thus allowing the retention, formation and orientation of the material particles in the pulp suspension to be substantially improved.
