Publication number: 20150365875Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a radio access network cell for connecting to a communications network. A client device that is connected to a Wi-Fi access network cell sends a request message to a node in the Wi-Fi access network cell. It receives a response from the node that includes information identifying at least one overlapping radio access network cell and a property of the overlapping radio access network cell. On the basis of a comparison between the property of the radio access network cell and a corresponding property of the Wi-Fi access network cell, the node determines whether to remain connected to the Wi-Fi access network cell or to move to the radio access network cell. This has the advantage that a client device that is already associated with a Wi-Fi AP can determine if another access network cell could provide it with a better service, for example if the conditions of the AP change dynamically.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 1, 2013Publication date: December 17, 2015Applicant: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Per-Daniel STALNACKE, Tomas NYLANDER, Jari Tapio VIKBERG

Patent number: 9113331Abstract: An identifier, required by a radio access network controller in order to support resource allocation associated with a predetermined condition, is sent from a core network to the radio access network controller independently of the predetermined condition. The identifier is thus available to the radio access network controller for verification of mobile user identity, regardless of whether it is needed to support resource allocation. A radio access network controller can receive an identifier in a communication sent by a core network according to a communication protocol. The radio access network controller terminates the communication protocol to access the communication, and uses the identifier for verification of mobile user identity.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2005Date of Patent: August 18, 2015Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Tomas Nylander, Jari Tapio Vikberg

Patent number: 8359033Abstract: A system and method of supporting packet-switched handover of a mobile station (MS) from a GERAN/UTRAN cell to a Generic Access Network (GAN) cell within a GAN. If the MS is within coverage of the GAN cell, the MS registers within the GAN triggering initiation of the packet-switched handover from the GERAN/UTRAN cell to the GAN cell. A preparation phase is then conducted for executing the packet-switched handover. The preparation phase includes identifying the MS context as part of the preparation phase and activating the GA-PSR TC towards the MS. Next, the packet-switched handover is executed, resulting in the MS switching to GAN mode. The MS then begins transferring packets via the GAN cell. The system and method also supports a packet-switched handover from the GAN cell to the GERAN/UTRAN cell.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 2007Date of Patent: January 22, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: John Walter Diachina, Jari Tapio Vikberg, Nils Peter Östrup

Patent number: 8244257Abstract: A method for a cellular network (100) comprising cells (110) of a first kind controlled by corresponding base stations (111), and cells (120-122) of a second kind controlled by corresponding base stations (125-127). The second kind of cells are smaller than the first kind of cells (110). The network (100) comprises functions (140) for control of the base stations, and functions (150) for handing over the control of user terminals (123, 112) between base stations. The method is used when a call in a cell of the second kind (120-122) is handed over to a base station of the first kind. The method lets said control function (140) of the base station of the cell of the second kind send identifying information to the control function (140) of the base station (111) of the first kind, such that if the call is to be handed back to the original base station (125-127), the original base station can be found by the network.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2007Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Thomas Walldeen, Tomas Nylander, Jari Tapio Vikberg

Patent number: 8165574Abstract: A method of establishing a call to or from a mobile station (MS) operating in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) access network. An interface is established between the MS and a Packet Mobile Switching Center (PMSC), and the call is initiated after the network accepts a service request from the MS for an originating call, or after the MS is notified of a terminating call. The PMSC requests packet-switched domain resources from a Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) and establishes a voice bearer channel with an endpoint in the network when the requested resources are available. The PMSC facilitates bidirectional voice traffic between the MS and the endpoint. The PMSC may also use the PCRF to modify the bearer. The PMSC then signals the MS to modify parameters for the established call.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2008Date of Patent: April 24, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM EricssonInventors: Magnus Hallenstål, Jari Tapio Vikberg
