Patent number: 9820916Abstract: A flow control apparatus adapted to receive a feeding set includes a housing capable of receiving at least a portion of the feeding set. A pumping device is supported by the housing and positioned to contact the feeding set when the feeding set is received by the housing so the pumping device acts on the feeding set to produce fluid flow in the feeding set for delivery of fluid to a subject. An ultrasonic sensor is supported by the housing and arranged with respect to the pumping device to produce a sensor signal indicative of a viscosity of the fluid delivered through the feeding set. A control circuit is in communication with the ultrasonic sensor for receiving the sensor signal from the sensor indicative of the viscosity of the fluid and in communication with the pumping device to control operation thereof.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2015Date of Patent: November 21, 2017Assignee: Covidien LPInventors: Jason Boulanger, Joseph Hudson, Lester Paul Trelford

Publication number: 20140296826Abstract: A safety syringe system including a safety syringe and an injection site preparation patch adapted for use with the safety syringe. The safety syringe includes a syringe body and a safety shield slidably disposed about the syringe body. The injection site preparation patch has a tissue-facing side and a syringe-facing side, and may include a substrate, a syringe adhesive layer adapted to adhere to a distal flange of the safety shield, a hydrogel layer adapted to adhere to tissue, and removable release liners disposed on either side. The patch may include a medicament, anesthetic, or a thermal compound. Adhesion between the patch and the flange is less than adhesion between the patch and tissue, so that the patch adheres to the shield with sufficient strength to enable the shield to slide over the needle upon withdrawal, but with insufficient strength to cause the patch to pull away from a patient's skin.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 13, 2014Publication date: October 2, 2014Applicant: Covidien LPInventors: Mel Finke, David Heagle, Jason Boulanger, Benjamin Silva, Warren Copp-Howland, Erick Garstka, Kathleen Tremblay, Michael Sellechio

Patent number: 8760146Abstract: A safety interlock for use in a medical device having a control system for controlling operation of the medical device includes a central tubular portion defining a fluid passage for passing fluid through the safety interlock. An outer ring portion is adapted for mounting the safety interlock in the medical device. A spoked connector portion connects the central tubular portion to the outer ring portion so that the outer ring portion is spaced radially outwardly from the central tubular portion in opposed relation with at least a portion of the central tubular portion. The safety interlock is adapted for mounting in the medical device in a path of electromagnetic radiation from a source of electromagnetic radiation such that the central tubular portion reflects the electromagnetic radiation to a electromagnetic radiation detector when properly loaded on the medical device.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2012Date of Patent: June 24, 2014Assignee: Covidien LPInventors: Joel D Wiesner, Joseph A Hudson, Jason Boulanger

Patent number: 8529511Abstract: A pump set for use in a liquid delivery pump of the type for delivering liquid to a patient, having an infrared radiation detector for detecting infrared radiation, and providing an indication that the pump set is properly loaded on the pump. The pump set comprises a conduit for the liquid and a safety interlock member which is carried by the conduit. The safety interlock member is formed of a material that transmits infrared radiation and blocks visible light.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2011Date of Patent: September 10, 2013Assignee: Covidien LPInventors: Jason Boulanger, Kevin C. Meier, David Rork Swisher
