Abstract: An alkaline earth alkylaryl sulfonate having a BN of at least 250, wherein the aryl radical is not phenol, wherein the alkyl chain is a linear chain that contains between 14 and 40 carbon atoms, and wherein the mole % of the aryl-sulfonate radical fixed on position 1 or 2 of the linear alkyl chain is between 13% and 30%. Such an alkaline earth alkylaryl sulfonate has improved compatibility, solubility, and foaming performances while having low color and no skin formation. The starting alkylate has a low iodine number, a very high level of monoalkylate, and, as a consequence, a high yield at the sulfonation step.

Abstract: A superalkalinized alkylaryl sulfonate of alkaline earth metal is disclosed. The aryl radical is either a tolyl, xylyl, o xylyl, ethyl phenyl, or cumenyl radical. The alkyl chain is a linear chain that contains between 14 and 40 carbon atoms, and the aryl sulfonate radical of alkaline earth metal is fixed, in a molar proportion comprised between 0 and 13% in positions 1 or 2 of the linear alkyl chain.

Abstract: An overbased alkaline earth metal single-aromatic ring hydrocarbyl salicylate-carboxylate is produced by overbasing a mixture of a single-aromatic ring hydrocarbyl salicylate, at least one solvent, a metal hydroxide, and an alkyl polyhydric alcohol alkaline earth metal hydroxide, by contacting that mixture with carbon dioxide under overbasing reaction conditions. The alkyl group of the alkyl polyhydric alcohol has from one to five carbon atoms. The overbased metal single-aromatic ring hydrocarbyl salicylate is treated, before, during, or subsequent to overbasing, with a long-chain carboxylic acid to form a single-aromatic ring hydrocarbyl salicylate-carboxylate.

Abstract: An alkylaryl composition wherein the aryl radical is other than phenol and wherein the alkyl radical is derived from an isomerized C14 to C40 normal alpha olefin and wherein either (1) the weight percent of the aryl radical fixed at position 1 or 2 of a linear alkyl chain is less than about 23, or (2) at least 28 weight percent of the alkyl radicals are branched chain alkyl radicals, or (3) both is useful for making alkaline earth alkylaryl sulfonates that can be used as lubricating oil additives.

This composition may have an alkaline earth double aromatic-ring alkylsalicylate as long as the mole ratio of single-ring alkylsalicylate to double aromatic-ring alkylsalicylate is at least 8:1. This composition may be produced by the three-step process involving neutralization of alkylphenols, carboxylation of the resulting alkylphenate, and filtration of the product of the carboxylation step.
