  • Patent number: 6538226
Abstract: The machining liquid includes a load of particles contained in a dielectric liquid. The particles are carbon microfibers, sectioned or not, having a diameter (e) comprised between 0.2 and 8 micrometers and a length which is a function of the machining gap (G) provided between the electrode-tool and the electrode-workpiece. Thanks to this load of carbon microfibers of well-defined dimensions and geometry, the electro-erosion output, the precision of machining, the condition of the surface obtained and the ability to replicate machining performances, are considerably improved.

  • Patent number: 6159543
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of wires with a brass surface and a predefined zinc content for application in wire electroerosion. Wire (32) made of copper or brass is passed through heated treatment chamber (14) filled with a zinc vapor, wherein the zinc in gas phase diffuses in wire (32). The concentration of zinc in gas phase and the temperature (T.sub.D) of wire (32) in treatment chamber (14) are regulated in such a way that the zinc content of the brass phase forming on the surface of the wire suitably corresponds to the predefined zinc content.

  • Patent number: 5858136
Abstract: Copper wire coated with a layer of zinc is heated to a temperature (T.sub.1) sufficient for the formation of a brass phase .beta., and the temperature is maintained until complete diffusion of the zinc. The thickness of the zinc covering can be chosen in such a way that once the zinc is completely diffused, the wire consists of a brass phase .beta. in its periphery and of copper in its central part. The wire is then heated to a temperature (T.sub.2) necessary for the formation of brass phase .alpha., and the central copper part of the wire is transformed into brass phase .alpha..

  • Patent number: 5196665
Abstract: A wire electrode for electro-erosion cutting consisting of a core of electrically conductive material. The core is covered with a film of multiple fine layers. The layers provide the characteristics of high electrical conductivity and low melting and vaporization temperatures in an alternating fashion. The alternating layers of the wire electrode may be diffused into one another in order to provide alloys of desired structure and composition. A method for producing the multi-layer electrode wire is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5047607
Abstract: An EDM machine in combination with a wire sectioning device. The wire sectioning device has two rotating members consisting of a rotating member 2 having an anvil 16 and a member 3 rotating in the opposite direction. The rotating member 3 has four cutting blades made of a tough material such as tungsten carbide or tungsten nitride. At least one of the anvil and the tool possesses a low moment of inertia to improve the longevity of the sectioning means.

  • Patent number: 4891485
Abstract: A device permits fastening a tool (preferably an EDM tool) to a machining head in at least two different orientations. The tool is mounted on a tool holder, and a pair of portions alternately fix the holder to the head in two different orientations, for example, one in which the tool is positioned for machining operations, and another in which it is positioned for touching up. In a first embodiment the portions are formed as two studs provided on the holder each engageable with the machining head. The studs are positioned with respect to the tool so that engagement with the machining head presents the tool in the two different orientations. In a second embodiment one of the portions is formed on a first tool holder which carries the tool thereon, while the other portion is formed on a second holder mountable to the machining head, the first holder being being mountable either to the machining head directly or to the second holder.

  • Patent number: 4547646
Abstract: A support mechanism for a workpiece cut off by electrical discharges in a travelling wire EDM apparatus. The workpiece is supported between support members provided with clamps. One support member is controllably pivotable around a horizontal axis, while the second support member is displaceable vertically and horizontally along crossed axes. In addition, the second support member may be rotated around a vertical axis. Through appropriate sequential operation of the clamps and relative displacement of the support members, the areas of the workpiece clamped by the clamps may be changed at will, and the cuttings from the workpiece may be supported by one of the clamp members to prevent the fall of the cuttings at the end of a cutting operation.

  • Patent number: 4134807
Abstract: A process and apparatus for electrically machining an electrode workpiece by means of an electrode tool, in which the electrode workpiece is first machined by EDM by way of electrical discharges occuring across a dielectric fluid. The electrode workpiece is subsequently subjected to a finishing pass in the course of which it is machined by electrochemical machining (ECM) through a conductive electrolyte replacing the dielectric fluid. The machining phase by ECM is effected by means of the same electrode tool or by means of an electrode tool of the same dimensions as is used during the machining phase with EDM. During machining by EDM, the electrode tool is orbited, or translated, in a direction perpendicular to the axis of feed of the electrode tool relative to the electrode workpiece, with an amplitude larger than the amplitude during machining by ECM.
