  • Patent number: 7951317
Abstract: A method of producing a composite part formed of a thermoplastic matrix reinforced with long glass fibers is provided. The method includes supplying a thermoplastic resin and high density glass granules to an injection or injection-compression device containing a single screw. The high density glass granules include long chopped strands formed of glass filaments sized with a sizing composition. The chopped glass strands may have a length from 6 to 30 mm. In addition, the glass granules may have a glass density between 90 and 99.5% and may have a length to diameter ratio (L/D) ratio of less than L, which is expressed in mm. A composite part obtained using the disclosed method is also provided.

  • Publication number: 20080254290
Abstract: The invention relates to a glass-strand sizing composition comprising the following constituents, in the following contents by weight expressed as percentages of the solids: 10 to 99% of at least one copolymer chosen from ethylene/vinyl acetate or ethylene/(meth)acrylic acid copolymers; 1 to 40% of at least one coupling agent; and 0 to 90% of polypropylene grafted by at least one unit derived from at least one monomer containing one or more functional groups that can react with the coupling agent. The glass strands obtained are intended for producing glass-strand granules with a high glass content for the production of composite parts having a thermoplastic matrix reinforced by chopped glass strands using the injection-moulding technique.

  • Publication number: 20080193757
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of producing a composite part that is formed from a thermoplastic matrix which is reinforced with long glass fibres. The inventive method comprises an injection or injection-compression moulding step which is performed by a device comprising a single screw which is supplied with the material and the reinforcement. The method is characterised in that the reinforcing fibres are introduced into the device in the form of long cut fibre granules having a glass density of between 90 and 99.5%, preferably between 95 and 99%, and having a length to diameter (L/D) ratio of less than L, expressed in mm. The invention also relates to the composite part obtained using said method.

  • Patent number: 5910461
Abstract: The present invention relates to glass fibers, especially for reinforcing organic materials and having an alumino-silicate glass composition, containing one or more alkaline earth metal compounds and with a low content of alkali metal compounds, wherein the composition further contains a combination of coloring agents formed from iron oxides, cobalt oxide and, optionally, chromium oxide, which enable the fibers to be dyed in bulk and to have more neutral tones.
