Publication number: 20030065347Abstract: A system for performing an end-to-side vascular anastomosis, including an anastomosis device, an application instrument and methods for performing a vascular anastomosis. The system is applicable for performing an anastomosis between a vascular graft and the ascending aorta in coronary artery bypass surgery, particularly in port-access CABG surgery. A first aspect of the invention includes a vascular anastomosis staple. A first configuration has two parts: an anchor member, forming the attachment with the target vessel wall and a coupling member, forming the attachment with the bypass graft vessel. The anastomosis is completed by inserting the coupling member, with the graft vessel attached, into the anchor member. A second configuration combines the functions of the anchor member and the coupling member into a one-piece anastomosis staple.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2002Publication date: April 3, 2003Inventors: Hanson S. Gifford, Lee R. Bolduc, Jeffrey A. Stein, Paul C. DiCesare, Peter F. Costa, William A. Holmes

Patent number: 5904693Abstract: A laparoscopic ligation clip applicator for automatically applying a plurality of ligation clips includes a handle assembly having an actuator, an elongated shaft connected to the handle assembly, and an actuating mechanism disposed within the shaft. The actuating mechanism includes a clamp for engaging a first piece of the ligation clip and a slidable driver for driving a second piece of the ligation clip relative to the first piece. The actuating mechanism also includes a hold for preventing rearward movement of the ligation clips, and an advancer for sequentially feeding the ligation clips. A slidable cam, operably connected to the handle assembly, actuates the clamp, the driver and the advancer.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1994Date of Patent: May 18, 1999Assignee: American Cyanamid CompanyInventors: Paul C. Patent number: 5893879Abstract: An apparatus for closing wide skin defects may be used with two long interdermal needles configured for insertion underneath skin close to margins of a skin defect. The skin closing apparatus may include two retaining members (70, 71) configured as a flange connecting two legs (20) and forming a U-shaped profile. Each of the legs may include either a sharp book (23) or a blunt skin insertion element at the end of the leg adapted for percing the skin and engaging one of the long interdermal needles. Alternatively, the retaining members may include topical engagement elements for engaging portions of the interdermal needles which are located above the skin surface. A contracting mechanism such as a screw (82) may connect the retaining members and approximate the interdermal needles, while bringing the skin margins together until final closure of the skin defect results.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1995Date of Patent: April 13, 1999Assignee: MedChem Products, Inc.Inventors: Bernard Hirshowitz, Amnon Levy, Alexander R. Patent number: 5830221Abstract: There is provided a surgical coil fastener applier for use in applying helical coil fasteners in surgical procedures, such as hernia repair, to affix surgical mesh to tissue. The coil fastener applier includes a housing having a handle extending therefrom and a trigger pivotally mounted on the housing. An elongated tubular portion extends from the housing and includes a drive rod rotatably supported therein and slidably supporting a plurality of coil fasteners thereon. A drive assembly is provided within the housing to rotate the drive rod and coil fasteners. The drive assembly includes an anti-reverse mechanism to allow rotation of the drive rod in only one direction. An actuation assembly is provided within the housing to convert the motion of the trigger into rotary motion for supply to the drive assembly. The drive assembly includes structure to limit the amount of rotary motion supplied to the drive assembly.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1996Date of Patent: November 3, 1998Assignee: United States Surgical CorporationInventors: Jeffrey A.
